Is there value in selling your childhood toys?
You know how Beanie Babies and Barbie Dolls can now be worth a lot of money? Yep and also Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Star Wars figures and more. I’m going to tell you my latest interest – why it jumped out as something I could really dig – and how you may have some hidden value in your selling your childhood toys.
I recently discovered Hot Wheels. They’re the childhood toy that’s been around for 50 years. There are people who have massive collections, and many of them are very valuable. If you have some old Hot Wheels you want to sell me, I’m interested.
If you have some of these Hot Wheels cars, you might want to consider selling your childhood toys — some worth $100,000 and more.
Episode #878 March 24, 2023
Hi this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real-life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable. This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die. Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show.
Thank you for being a listener of this podcast. I love hearing from you and being allowed to think through the questions we all have about finding or creating work that matters, for people who care.
Questions:
You said recently that by risking failure you would open yourself up to many more deals and make far more money over time. How does that work?
This listener is referencing a story I shared in No More Dreaded Mondays, Page 85, advice from a guy who worked for me at the car lot I had.
He told me that if I’m making money on every single car that I’m playing it too safe. You’ll do okay, but you’ll never really get rich on making money on every single car. I started realizing over time that if I only made money on 85% of them that I could increase what I was making when I was making money on 100% of the cars.
That experience taught me to lower my expectations for success in other ways as well. I set my goals for the year with the anticipation that I’ll be able to hit 100% of them. If I hit 100% of them, it means I didn’t stretch far enough.
I talk about Finding Your Zone of Genius, breaking the things you do into four areas:
- Things you do where you’re Incompetent
- Things you do where you’re Competent
- Things you do that you are Excellent In
- Things you do where you are in your Zone of Genius
If you’re working in your area of competence — doing something you do well but that others can do as well, you can be successful 100% of the time because there’s no risk. You’re not pushing yourself to try new things.
When you move into your Zone of Excellence — doing something you are known for, you may lower your success rate to 80%. There will be things that are not as predictable.
When you move into your Zone of Genius, that success rate is going to drop to 50%. You’ll swing at some really big things, and you’re going to miss some of those. But there’s also the potential that you’ll hit a home run.
I’m a family doctor but am going blind. How can I continue to make money?
This listener loves teaching, coaching, and educating and is a family doctor and obesity specialist.
Your experience and education as a family doctor and obesity specialty is your highest potential area to continue to generate money. There are so many ways you can use your education and experience in those areas to generate money without going the traditional family doctor route where people come into your office.
Alan Thomas is a great example. He’s not a doctor, but he knows what it takes to make the decision to lose weight. You can find out more about him at TransformMyFuture.com/48Days
Check out things like ZocDoc.com and Better Help to continue to leverage your medical background and continue to monetize that.
If you enjoy writing, I encourage you to write about certain areas of your expertise.
If I work overtime I’m neglecting my family, if don’t work overtime I’m neglecting my employer and our only source of income.
Don’t make generalizations like, “the jobs around here pay half of what I’m making.” All you need is one.
Do a job search in a 15-minute radius of where you live. Look at Chapter 8 in 48 Days To the Work You Love, where I talk about how to understand your most marketable skills and then position yourself to be attractive to companies. It doesn’t have to be your dream job.
Then use that 15-hour model to build your side business. Once you’re making 50% of your income with your side business, then you can start to look at going full-time in your business.
Will taking a job as a Simi truck driver just sidetrack, or give valuable experience and resources towards my dream?
This listener is a new member of the 48 Days Eagles Community that has a dream of owning a hammock business but is looking at the opportunity of driving a dream.
First, look at how far you are on that dream of owning a hammock business. If you’ve already made progress on that dream, you may not need to get another job.
If you don’t, then driving a Simi truck may be a good option. But you better have a clear plan of when you want to make that transition if it really is something you want to develop.
To answer your question regarding what you can get out of the 48 Days Eagles Community. We do have a lot of resources in there. You can check them out here.
The Eagles Community only opens a few times a year, but it will be opening very soon (in April) so jump on the waiting list so you are alerted when our doors open next.
