The First 48 Days
“
48 Days began as a Sunday school class called Career Transitions. I expected to have the high school senior wondering what to choose as a major in college or the recent college graduate who was frustrated by the reality of the real workplace.
While we had a few of those, what surprised me was the number of physicians, dentists, chiropractors, pastors, accountants and other seasoned professionals. When asked why they were there, the common responses included statements like,
“I’m doing ok but I don’t think this is it – I think there’s something more I should be doing with my life.”
“I now know I’m living someone else’s dream, not my own.”
“I feel like I’ve climbed the ladder of success only to find it has taken me to a place I don’t want to be.”
“My ability has trapped me in a life I no longer enjoy.”
I had not anticipated these responses in a class on choosing or transitioning in a career. But it was that sweet spot that intrigued me.
How can we find that place that goes beyond ability or other’s expectations to find that special blend of passion, talent and money?
“
That little class grew and grew, attracting people from other churches and even other states. We moved from a Sunday school class to Monday nights where we had an uninterrupted two hours to dig in deeper. This developed into a series of eight sessions covering understanding our personalities, embracing our passions, and exploring work models outside the traditional 8-5 job.
People came until they completed the eight sessions and more as they found the tools and support to navigate the inevitable transitions. Those attendees asked for materials they could share with family members and friends, but I had nothing other than my rough notes. With continued requests I finally put those notes together with two audio cassettes in a 3-ring binder.
“
In 2002 Joanne and I went to Mega-Book Marketing University with Mark Victor Hansen in Los Angeles. We came back from that 3-day conference, put in place what we had heard and in the next thirty months sold over $2,000,000 worth of that simple 3-ring binder. Seeing proof of success, publishers quickly lined up. I signed my first book agreement and 48 Days to the Work You Love quickly became a New York Times best seller.
While this was happening, I was offered a slot on the local 100,000 watt radio station in Nashville, TN where we were living. With the shift to radio, the audience grew dramatically. For the next six years I shared the same principles – look inward first to know how you are uniquely gifted, then find or create an environment that blends what you know about yourself into meaningful, purposeful and profitable work.
“
And yes, I was concerned about the time delays I often observed in people taking action. We would meet, map out a clear plan for a better life, and then I’d run into them a year later and they hadn’t done anything – still getting ready to take action. Often waiting until the kids graduated from school, until the mortgage was paid off or until there was ‘enough’ savings to manage a change. Because of that I borrowed the popularity of the TV show 48 Hours and experimented with the number 48 as being enough days to assess where one is, get the advice of others, choose four or five options, do a little more research, choose one and ACT.
The addition of 48 Days to my content worked like magic. Suddenly, people responded with excitement for the clear message and the simple 48-day timeline for transformation!
It was like someone threw gasoline on everything I was offering. And that has never stopped. It’s not about the number. It’s about committing to take action and follow through.
After six years on the radio, a young techie friend suggested I post segments of my radio show on this new thing called podcasts. I was amazed to immediately connect with people from around the world. Today there are over 4 million podcasts and I am told the 48 Days podcast is solidly in the top 1% of all the podcasts in the world.
We use eagles as a symbol of rising above the crowd, having supernatural vision and being willing to go where others hold back.
Today we continue to offer books, courses, seminars, live events, an online community, a mastermind, personal coaching, and group investing to keep sharing the principles that have helped so many people find – or create – more meaningful work.
Our team is led by my daughter, Ashley Logsdon, giving me freedom to think, write and create from our home in Osprey, Florida.
Tune in to the episode of the 48 Days podcast to hear all three of Dan Miller's children (Kevin, Jared & Ashley) share about their choices on Education and Career Choices.
