Hi Dan,
I’ve been a Recruiter by trade for 10+yrs and in that time while placing people in a multitude of industries, mostly Sales, Software & IT. In addition to placing these professionals I’ve counseled/coached many of them in “how to switch careers, do the same career a different way..i.e. remote/virtual etc as well as discussed various ways to add other income streams that allow them to control their time and have a life. I’ve had to do this 3 times in my life, some planned, some not, still doing this myself, and enjoy helping others see that there is a different way to do things.
I get asked for Career switch advice more times than I can count, as recent as last week, met with two people in staffing, one 350kyr, other 220kyr, mid 30’s and on her second divorce. She missed one brief amount of time at work to handle personal biz and they were already complaining. She’s at her wit’s end with trying to juggle commute, kids etc. Again I found myself explaining how she can do this same biz a different way and HAVE TIME for family and biz and absolutely love helping others figure this out.
My question is this, I am considering starting my own staffing business again, did it before in a down economy after Dot.com crash, and also want to develop an income stream that offers career coaching to people who make a great income but have limited time. I know from experience that there is some overlap in staffing and career coaching but was wondering if I should setup a separate website for each since the paths are somewhat different.
Your thoughts/advice welcomed,
Tim Hansen
Tim,
Sounds like you’re perfectly positioned for doing this on your own. I assume you do not have a non-compete in place with the company you currently work for. I would encourage you to combine the recruiting and coaching rather than trying to have two separate websites. They are very closely aligned and one can feed from the other.
Hi Dan,
Thanks for the prompt feedback!
No I do not have a Non compete with any company. I’ve been working as a Contract Recruiter & usually get paid a decent hourly rate to complete a hiring project and then move on. Looking to combine elements of that model to finance my new venture until Placement fee’s earned for a Direct hires. Only concern in combining the two is that my coaching will focus on how to combine multiple income streams and do the job virtually and this may be contradictory to how some companies may view employees their trying to hire from me in that they want someone completely dedicated, or so they say, to their position. I saw this last week when a staffing agency let someone go because the had a side pet business even though it didn’t interfere with their job. CEO didn’t like someone having any other work interests than there own. I have seen two other career coaches setup a website that mention their also Recruiters for an Agency, not their company, and I am speaking to someone this week that owns her own compan, 11yrs, and has done both to shed some more insight.
Thanks again for your advice
Tim
Hi Dan,
Can you link the article that talks about no longer using employees?
Thanks,
