Knowing yourself is the first step in moving toward the career or business that will be the work you love. Understanding yourself is the only way to have confidence, boldness and enthusiasm about the direction you have chosen. My daughter Ashley joins me to add her expertise in understanding ourselves and increasing our effectiveness in all areas of our lives.
Episode #803 November 05, 2021
Hi this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real-life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable. This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die. Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show.
What kind of business would be a fit for me?
We focus on the DISC Personality Assessment because it’s simple and easy to understand, but we love them all.
D = Dominant or Driver
I = Inspirational
S = Steady and Consistent
C = Compliance and Detail-Oriented
Most people are high in one or two of these areas.
There are no good or bad, right or wrong personality styles. By understanding yourself and your personality tendencies, you can choose work that fits best with your personality style.
Will understanding yourself make you a more effective parent?
Absolutely! As well as understanding your significant other and your children. Ashley and her husband Nathan talk all the time about “completing” one another rather than “competing” with one another as well as making sure we are “collaborative” in our approach versus “combative.”
I know selling could increase my income but I don’t think I can sell.
Each of the personality styles has characteristics that make a good salesperson.
We share the sales model below:
40% is developing trust and rapport. A High I personality style has a real sweet spot for this element of the sales process.
30% is identifying the need of the person. A High S personality style does a great job listening and discerning others’ needs.
20% is product knowledge. This is where a HIgh C personality style often shines — sharing details and answering questions.
10% is gaining commitment. The High D is good in this area.
It is also important to note that there are different types of selling, depending on the product, so you can gravitate to the type of selling that your personality shines in. For instance:
• Cars, furniture, and jewelry selling is good for a High D personality style because you likely see people one time and need to gain commitment from them quickly.
• Sales representatives that call on the same account each month and the sale is based on relationships would best fit a High I or S personality style that thrives in relationships.
• A High C personality style is best-selling systems and equipment where a lot of details and specifics are needed like MRI machines.
By understanding yourself, you can begin to find things that you are naturally good at.
Why do Ashley’s three girls need Challenge, Structure, and Fun in any project?
Ashley has three daughters, each with a different personality style. So in all their family and learning activities, Ashley and her husband Nathan build in three things: Challenge, Structure and Fun:
Structure and understanding the why will best motivate their high C personality style.
If their high I personality style can’t find fun in something, it’s a tough sell, so we build that in for her.
A challenge is what motivates their high D personality style.
