Episode #589 – December 08, 2017
This week we talk about education and the different ways you can get it. The important thing is to understand your end goal before you decide what kind of education you need: a masters degree, a high impact seminar or even traveling the world.
Hi, this is Dan Miller. You’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable. This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die. Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show.

For knowledge need no further look
Between covers of a good book
Maybe for a small fee
Or the library, it’s free
For information that flows like a brook

“The goal of education is not to increase the amount of knowledge but to create the possibilities for a child to invent and discover, to create men who are capable of doing new things.” Jean Piaget TWEET THIS

With regard to your discussion of higher education and advanced degrees, I had a resume client with a Ph D in Eastern Philosophy who wanted to transition out of academia into an administrative position. I asked him to cite three accomplishments that he considered to be examples of his best use of skills. He stated, “I don’t have any accomplishments.” But he felt he was “too good” to take on an entry level position that would allow him to develop his managerial and organizational skills so that he would have something to build on. An advanced degree may be an ego builder, but it can wreck a career if you don’t want to be a teacher, researcher or writer.
Let’s not falsely attribute an individual’s behaviors and attitudes to an elective experience that doesn’t produce the same result in most everyone else. Let’s not blame the tools for our faulty workmanship. Same attitude, expectations, and social interactions will get same results regardless of degrees or certs.
