I have a MBA and live in a homeless shelter!

masters degree

Episode #589 – December 08, 2017

This week we talk about education and the different ways you can get it. The important thing is to understand your end goal before you decide what kind of education you need: a masters degree, a high impact seminar or even traveling the world.

Hi, this is Dan Miller. You’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable.  This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die.  Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show.

Here’s a Font Designed Specifically For Dyslexia

I have a master’s degree and live in a homeless shelter.

How can we teach our 12-yr-old son Entrepreneurship skills?

For twenty years, I wanted to be an entrepreneur and for twenty years nothing.

I’ve contacted several companies inquiring about salary, but cannot get anyone to take or return my calls.

Good News

Cliff Feightner poem:

For knowledge need no further look
Between covers of a good book
Maybe for a small fee
Or the library, it’s free
For information that flows like a brook

“The goal of education is not to increase the amount of knowledge but to create the possibilities for a child to invent and discover, to create men who are capable of doing new things.” Jean Piaget  TWEET THIS

Show Notes:

4:50 Why good news is important to share

5:30 A podcast listener shares her good news. She and a church group recently bought a single mom a brand new SUV. They saw a need and they filled out.

12:18 Scott has a masters degree and lives in a homeless shelter. Dan says it grieves him that there are so many people out there with masters or advanced degrees earning $8-10/hour and recommends that if you’re thinking about getting a masters or advanced degree that you think about how you might be able to invest that money into yourself via a seminar, travel, in your own business, etc. Ask yourself:  is it the best use of your time and money to get an advanced degree?

20:16 Dan shares Benjamin Franklin’s concerns that higher education doesn’t provide people with practical, marketable skills, yet we’re still having the same issues today.

22:43 Abby asks Dan for a list of books he would recommend for her to give to her 20 something sons to help them explore their talents and gifts and to find their careers. His recs:

24:20 Dan talks about what you should be doing in your 20s and 30s. There aren’t many things he would consider a mistake at that age. Be careful about locking into a career too early.

26:00 Dan shares his history of education and why he went to school, not for a piece of paper so someone would hire him.

28:07 Dan shares his daughter Ashley’s unschooling experiences with his 3 granddaughters. They may be learning more than they could sitting in a seat in a classroom.

29:20 Steve will soon be teaching a class on entrepreneurship to teens and asked Dan for resources. Dan’s recommendations.

34:30 Dan shares a Washington Post article highlighting the growing number of young Americans leaving their desk jobs to farm.

36:49 A listener has been dreaming of becoming an entrepreneur for 20 years, but nothing. He’s now selling insurance but doesn’t like his job. Dan reminds him that there’s a big difference between deciding and doing and recommends that he develop a clear plan that starts by setting his goals, using the 48 Days Power of Goals Workbook. He tells him that 85% of the process in finding work you love comes from looking inward first and encourages him to do so.

42:40 A listener who has had two of his four children in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and his wife would like to design a shirt for the 48 Days Amazon Merch Account that says “Proud Parent of a NICU Graduate.” Dan says definitely. Send it on. Send it to askdan@48days.com.

45:06 A Civil Engineer is looking to relocate to Texas and asks Dan what he should do. He says he’s called several companies inquiring about salary and has not received any feedback. Dan’s advice:  Don’t start with salary. Start the job search process using the 48 Days process. Don’t discuss salary until they decide they want you.
