It may be time to reassess
Ford is no longer making the Pinto, or the Taurus, or the Crown Victoria. The only car they are making this year is the Mustang. They have moved totally to building SUVs and pickup trucks. So what about you? Are you still doing the same thing you were doing 20 years ago? If you’re still doing what you were doing 5 years ago, rather than being praised for your loyalty, you may be becoming obsolete. It may be time to reassess.

Hi this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real-life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable. This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die. Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show.
Thank you for being a listener of this podcast. I love hearing from you and being allowed to think through the questions we all have about finding or creating work that matters, for people who care.
Questions:
For the most part, I guess I have been doing work that I love, but after 5-6 years in one place I get a bit bored. Is that normal?
It is great to know this about yourself. Embrace who you are. Be prepared to reassess every few years and look at what your next move might be. I do the same thing. I like change and love a challenge. Just the idea that something may not work is invigorating and energizing for me.Am I writing good enough for others? I have self-published 2 books on Kindle but only a few were sold.
Mark Victor Hansen, the author of Chicken Soup for the Soul, says that everybody wants to write a book. He says he tells them that’s great. Do that. Work hard on it and get your book written. Then you are 10% finished. 90% of the process is letting people know about it. Be sure to focus on marketing your book as much or more than you do on the book itself.I have a hard time deciphering what type of business I want to start. I get caught up in shiny object syndrome.
Make a list of 20 ideas. It’s great to have a lot of different ideas. Then filter those through what you know about yourself. Don’t just get caught up in an idea that someone else is doing well. You have to own it. Get the advice and opinion of others. Do a little more research on the three or four that seem to make the most sense to you. Then choose one and act. You are not going to have all the green lights for starting any idea. So do something and learn as you go. You can always reassess later. My challenge is having a wife who is almost the complete opposite (anti-entrepreneur) of me (entrepreneur).
You don’t want to be clones of each other. That would be boring. Joanne and I are very different. I am very grateful for the different perspective she brings to her household. Help her get another job. If she functions best there, don’t try to make her into an entrepreneur. In terms of getting her support of your entrepreneurship, the best way to do that is to have some success in what you do.I am currently in a very unfulfilling position processing (approving/denying) transactions all day. I make the money I need to survive, but feel that I am just going thru the motions, because it is boring.
Ken Honda in his book Happy Money calls that “sad money.” Check out my son Kevin’s interview with Ken Honda on the Self Helpful Podcast: Part 1 Part 2 It may be time to reassess what you’re doing.Quotation:
