In May of 1985 Jobs was effectively fired by John Sculley, who’d joined Apple from Pepsi as CEO. Steve Jobs was free to do his own thing.
“The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.” — Steve Jobs, 2005
I love when Steve Jobs said our goal isn’t to be better, it’s to be different!
That opened a whole new world of perspective. I believe we can all benefit from our differences. Cause THAT, we all are, and that’s big time cool, too!
Hi Dan,
When I jumped on the stairclimber this morning, I was excited to know that I had your latest on-demand show ready to listen to.
I’m only about 20 minutes into it and you’ve already touched on two things that have resonated: 1) being fired; and 2) seasons.
I still find in hilarious that in my earlier, 20-something years, I was fired from some of the television stations that I now frequent as a guest and as a visiting author. I told that story to a woman on a plane yesterday and watched her struggle to keep the coffee she had just drank from coming out of her nose. 🙂
You mentioned “seasons” in the show. That concept is HUGE. When I sit down with someone for the first time, I help them to zero-in on their current season. I have found that to be, (at least for me) a difference-maker in the growth process.
So many times, people, with the best of intentions, try to plant something new or RAISE THEIR GAME with something existing, during the wrong season.
I was leading a call the other day and when I opened it up for Q&A, the first person that spoke up was a married woman in her 50s. And, in between her sobs and tears, she admitted to me, the virtual classroom, and most importantly to herself, that for a long time, years, she was ignoring and pretending the season didn’t exist that God currently had her in.
That knowledge for her was a game-changer.
“On Demand Radio” ABSOLUTELY! That says it is made convenient for everyone, and convenience is a good seller these days. AND, convenience of accessibility to the 48 Days “On Demand Radio” create “CHAMPIONS!” Love the song add on, it really adds to the excitement here!
How do I define success? The opportunity of crossing paths with THE greatest people and resources on the face of this planet! After that (IF I the determination and passion), the sky is the limit!
Gonna try and learn all I can at the March INNOV48, and can’t wait!

“Another proud 48 Days Advisory Team Member, at YOUR service!”
Archie,
Yep – I love the title “On Demand Radio” as well. Sounds far more exciting than “podcast.” Thanks for your comments.
Read a cool comment in “Success” magazine that I think I’ll adopt – Success is doing work that matters for people who care.
Nailed it with that one. And it’s the people who care, that encourage you to do even more!
Thank you Dan for your guidence on the affiliate programming. I am taking a different look at my website site to see where I can bring value to people. This journey is both exciting and scary, but I am having fun with it. Thanks again for all you do.
Thanks for another great episode Dan!
One of the cornerstone concepts I rely on for my coaching and on-demand radio show is that YOU get to write your own definition of success. It is such a foreign concept to virtually everybody I talk to. All our lives we are trained to believe that success is defined by our house, our neighborhood, our income, our bank account, our car(s), our titles, and on and on and on.
To break through all that programming is hard so we usually start one step at a time. “What would consider a successful January?” for example and build from there. When the realization actually occurs in their mind for the first time… its pretty exciting to watch!
Personally, my definition of success (for this season) is to make work optional and location irrelevant. We’re injecting as many mini-vacations in our year as we can fit and one “big” one to get out of the country for a month. Whether we make all those or not, success is in the journey to reach those goals. Who knows, we may find something we want more along the way!
Thanks again for another great show. Really enjoy listening!
Thom
Thom – great concepts your sharing. Yes, success is in the journey – and that looks different for each of us. Thanks for your comments.
Hi Dan:
Wanted to share my own story similar to Steve Jobs. First of all, I love my job teaching band at a local high school. However, I continue to work my own business for extra income and because you are subject to the whims of bad leaders at times. Last year I thought I was going to lose my job (too long of a story for this note).
Yes, I was a little sad while waiting to find out the news, but on the other hand my mind started being very active because I felt I had 20 different directions I would now be free to pursue. I could; 1) Work at another school and get the chance to build up another band program to success 2) Go back full time into self-employment as a speaker/musician 3) Become a music pastor at a church 4) Many more options. It was almost like – if I had been fired – it would be a slight relief, and this from a job I love!
Best wishes,
James Divine
