Great podcast Dan! There is another option for education that doesn’t cost a dime. My 21 year old son is in his second year of a four year apprenticeship to become a certified electrician. This on the job and classroom training is all provided by my sons employer.
This didn’t just fall in my sons lap though. Instead of taking a minimum wage job, or incurring thousands in student loan debt like a lot of his friends did, my son chose to look for another option.
After a lot of digging online and talking to people my son discovered that if a healthy, strong, motivated and drug free young person was willing to go work in the remote oilfields of northern Alberta Canada, they can become a certified tradesman with no out of pocket expense AND earn a great living while doing it!
This isn’t a free ride though! It’s bitterly cold in the winter, the work is hard, the days are long, he is far from home and family and friends living in a camp BUT while his friends at home say they have “no choice but to work for minimum wage or rack up student loan debt” my son chooses this option! (Which ties in nicely to another topic you covered in your podcast)
Allan,
Oh I love that. What a great example of being creative and willing to see a goal and go after it!
Allan,
You must be proud of your son for delaying gratification and choosing a path of short-term hardship in exchange for long-term success.
I have been wondering what makes one person take the initiative to research alternative options and then pursue them? What is it about a person’s character that gives them the confidence or causes them to question “is there something more?”.
Happy 2015! As always another great episode! The statistics on homeless college graduates just made me want to scream. I just talked to a young woman who “eh, I’ll just take out a student loan’ but when I told her the sum she was going to take out would result in at least 1,500/mo payment for ten years she was shocked. There lays a big part of the issue. No one is showing them how much they have to pay back per month after they are done.
Camilla,
Yeah it’s really sad. Check out some of the comments over where I wrote the blog – https://www.48days.com/homeless-college-students-will-be-homeless-slaves-with-massive-debt/
Just read through many of them. Thank you for referring me over there. Wow! Glad you are bringing up the topic. As a society we need to get our heads out of the sand and start tackling this problem.
Dan: I have informally taken up the challenge you offered last year to read at least 30 minutes a day. I set a goal for reading 20-30 books in 2015. Today is the 17th, and I just finished my third book! At that rate, I will read more than 60 books this year. I don’t expect to keep up this pace, but I do feel like the content I am absorbing is changing me for the better. I am learning so much, gaining confidence, and becoming more focused on my goals. I am a regular listener to your podcast, and I have added WTTB to my educational material for 2015. I hope to attend your CWE program in September. Thank you for your ministry to those of us who are pursuing a career change.
Blessings!

Hi Dan,
I really appreciate you mentioning Darren Hardy’s DarrenDaily. I was looking for something brief yet inspirational and actionable that I could integrate into my early morning routine. This is perfect and I’m now subscribed!
What’s the date for the one that included these 6 habits of the rich stats? I’ve gone back through his archives and couldn’t locate it.
Thank you!
Tyler
Dan,
Thank you for sharing the 6 habits of rich people. It’s just a reminder that if you want to be rich, financially and in other areas of your life, you have to be intentionally in living your life.
