Episode #760 January 15, 2021
Hi this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable. This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die. Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show.
Questions:
What does it mean when someone knows what to do but doesn’t do it?
Yes, there is definitely a term for that, and you don’t want any of them attached to your name because they sound like procrastinator and sluggard. Here are some of the reasons why we get stuck and what to do about it:
1. Being comfortable — not having a burning desire.
Without a burning desire, many of us get stuck in what I call comfortable misery. It’s not great, but it’s not terrible. It’s just comfortable misery. That’s why a lot of times it takes some kind of inciting incident, some kind of a precipitating situation. before we take action. That’s why I hear from so many of you who lost a job and it’s a terrible, horrible thing and then two months later you tell me that’s the best thing that ever happened to you because it prompted you to look at options. Now you’re doing something way more fulfilling, way more profitable than you’ve ever done in your life.2. Distractions.
There are a whole lot of other things that get our attention, and we all are busy. I would encourage you to share what your idea is — share what it is you want to do with other people so you have a little bit of built in accountability. We have a lot of people do that in Eagles Community to get some gentle nudging to continue moving forward.3. Negativity.
Sometimes we know what the negative things would be if we move forward and it didn’t work out as an example, but as you’ve heard me talk about many times here, this is the law of attraction. If you think about the downside, you tend to draw those things toward you. That can cause you to get stuck as well.4. Laziness
Sometimes it comes down to just lack of ambition.. There are few things that make me cringe more than that — the idea of being what the Bible describes as a sluggard.5. Uncertainty
This can be another thing holding you back or keeping you stuck. When you find yourself making excuses and you find that you fear something, that’s where you have to decide — DECIDE. The word comes from the same word as homicide and suicide. It means something is going to die. You’re going to kill something. You’re going to kill the fear, negativity, uncertainty or whatever it is that’s holding you back and keeping you stuck. If you have burning desire, then you can work through the excuses you’ve been making and get through the fear that seems to come with that. You don’t have to make the fear go away. But you decide not to let it hold you back any longer.I have struggled with a lack of commitment and find myself in the same place I was a year ago.
I think I’ve been stuck so long in this state that I can’t remember my passions.
When I grew up, we never talked about joy and fulfillment and meaning and purpose in the work that we did. You just worked because you needed to — because it’s what’s responsible. You do whatever it takes. So you just bite the bullet and go to the salt mine every morning with your little lunch box.
I don’t believe that. So I had to grow out of that. I want to encourage you to do so as well, As I write about in Wisdom Meets Passion, your passion often is more developed than it is discovered. So it’s not like it’s there full blown and you magically discover what that is. No, you start moving toward things that you’re interested in. As you do those and develop competencies and skill in an area, your passion will grow along with that. So passion is like the intersection of multiple curiosities. But having passion by itself doesn’t mean anything. Like I talked about in my recent webinar about finding your sweet spot you can have a hobby. You can have an area of interest, but it doesn’t do much to move the needle or change the world until it’s combined with talent and money. Our 20 year old son came home for Christmas break and informed us he will not be going back to college for spring semester.
I sent her a copy of No More Dreaded Mondays for her son. No More Dreaded Mondays came after 48 Days To the Work You Love which is primarily focused on getting a traditional job. Well, a lot of people are saying, I’m not sure I want another job. You know, I’m tired of being jerked around. I knowledge that right at the very end in the last two chapters of 48 Days To the Work You Love. If you’re thinking you aren’t sure you want another job, there are other options. So the next book that I wrote was No More Dreaded Mondays, in which I talked about how you take an idea and turn it into profitable, meaningful, fulfilling work.Quotation:
