Maybe you don’t deserve a better life? If you’ve ever thought that, you may be creating our own reality. Self-sabotage is real. But be sure you’re living your own life, not the life you think others expect of you. Embrace what you know about yourself to find that authentic path.
Episode #746 October 09, 2020
Hi, this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable. This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die. Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show.
Questions:
How can a person get past self-sabotage – I seem to be sabotaging everything they try to do?
I talk about Upper Limit Challenges in the new version of 48 Days To the Work and Life You Love (developed from Gay Hendricks’ book, The Big Leap). Be aware of what you may have as an Upper Limit Challenge that could result in self-sabotage. But it’s also important to embrace your personality. If you’re introverted, don’t put yourself out there to paint in public. Don’t set yourself up for self-sabotage. Instead have 10 paintings of vintage cars and set them up at a car show or even have someone else do that for you. My friend Ron Baldwin got an agent to put his work out there. So that may be an option as well. Two books I would recommend:- The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks to help you understand self-sabotage and your Upper Limit Challenges
- The War of Art by Steven Pressfield to help you push through the resistance of getting your art out there
When the pandemic started and all our business shut down. What should we do now?
Continue to move toward selling your products online (Etsy, Facebook, etc.) Just this past week, I had Celebrity Photographer Jeremy Cowart on as a Monday Mentor Training in the 48 Days Eagles Community. Celebrities typically come to him to have their photos made. That came to a stop. Instead of just waiting, he started doing virtual photography where people take a photo of themselves and send it to him and he enhances and makes it into a professional photograph. He did 1200 photoshoots in six weeks and made more money than he would have made in that same period of time. Kent Julian, also in the 48 Days Eagles Community has taken his in-person speaking presentation and is delivering it online as a course, making $100,000 in these four months.Dan: wondering what you would call retirement
I do not think you should retire! If you get up every morning and can do what you enjoy doing, why would you change it?How do I go about finding out about the market/need for specific leather items I can make?
You are on the right track. Don’t be a generalist. Be a specialist. Listen to the full story of the wood carving on our property, Aristotle. Find your niche that embraces what you really care about. Why don’t I hear more about a franchise opportunity being a good idea from folks like you?
I totally love franchises. When you look at the continuum of work models, you have on one side the traditional 9 to 5 job. At the other end, you have a non-traditional, unstructured business. There are a whole lot of things in between there. Franchises are about midway through that continuum. It’s a very structured opportunity. That is not what most entrepreneurs are going to gravitate to. But it’s a great opportunity who wants a clear model for how to be successful. With the franchise model, you are in business for yourself but not by yourself.I know that it would be virtually impossible to replace my current salary of over $200k if I followed my passion.
Stop thinking that you can’t make $200,000 following your passion. The three legs of the stool: passion, talent, and money. If you have talent and money but no passion, as you do here, you will burn out. No matter how irrational it may seem, you can make money doing very unique things. A few thoughts:- Coach other worship leaders
- Create a course for worship leaders
- Develop a membership community for worship leaders
