Quotation
“Work is love made visible. And if you cannot work with love but only with distaste, it is better that you should leave your work and sit at the gate of the temple and take alms of those who work with joy. For if you bake bread with indifference, you bake a bitter bread that feeds but half man’s hunger. And if you grudge the crushing of the grapes, your grudge distills a poison in the wine. And if you sing though as angels, and love not the singing, you muffle man’s ears to the voices of the day and the voices of the night.” Kahil Gibran, from “The Prophet”

Thanks Dan. I agree about continuing to give, I was wondering if it was worth it to express my concerns over the loss of income to my supervisor after handing over the responsibility. But I knew that going in, so I am not sure it is worth bringing up at all. Will continue to give everything my best regardless. Thanks again for your advice, appreciate it. 🙂
Thanks for addressing my concern about needing to dumb down my resume in order to get the job I want. However, I should have explained that I just need a job (cash flow coming in) so I can keep looking for what I really want, but many of the jobs that seem abundant and easy to get- just to keep food on the table- will require me to take off experience and education in order to be considered. So, I guess in order to get a job, I should dumb it down- but to get what I really want, I need to keep my experience on there.
Sure – that’s a reasonable plan. If you’re a dentist it would be tough to get hired on at FedEx even if you just needed the holiday income. You are not required to show the D.D.S. even if you have it. Just keep in mind a resume is a sales brochure for where you want to go. Shape it to be exactly that.
Great podcast, the comment regarding the aspiring government worker struck a chord with me. As a government worker and small business owner of aviation training products (WingsOfun.com). A close friend challenges me to jump ship from the public sector to private. While my reasons are sound at this point I was blown away by the example of the hotdog stand owner. The small business owner has hundreds of bosses (customers) while an employee has one boss, thus higher risk. Thank helping me expand my mind!
Tom,
My pleasure. Often the answers I give are not intended to be absolutes but simply prods to stretch our thinking. Glad its working.
Always enjoy listening to your shows Dan. Truly an inspiring part of my day!
Really love how you broke down the “leap of faith” comment.
Way to often, folks (with the best of intentions) decide to take a leap of faith and then lay responsibility for the success or failure on some other entity – other people, the economy, the universe, God, the wind, etc.
As you skillfully laid-out, the the first four predictors of success must be accounted for before the step of faith comes in – passion, determination, talent, and self discipline.
Thanks Joel – those leaps of faith do come easier if we’ve done the preparation first.
I just now listened to this cast. Missed it when it originally came out.
The question about working for a government job is super important for some careers, like civil engineering, public development, politics, foreign service, etc.
The process really sucks for getting into the governmental jobs, and I am not sure about how to use the 48 Days process of sending directly to a representative within an agency due to overblown security concerns.
Right now I am looking for work in the civil engineering field and I have had to think outside the box to not limit my search. I wasn’t able to do this before I moved to Brazil, I was just thinking government job or large multi-national firm. After seeing the industry from a different perspective there are a lot of opportunities for an engineer ranging from banking, investigation, law, finance, marketing, sales, and management. Currently on my list of ideal companies I tried to limit government position to 1 in 5 on the list.
