As I’m working on revisions to 48 Days to the Work You Love for the 10th Anniversary Edition, I’m reminded of the things that really open the door to our success. I see so many people who are chasing yet one more degree or one more lucky connection to give them the break they need.
And then I got a message from Robin Sharma describing the 4 Big Secrets of the Top 5% Achievers. These are things any of us can do – Today.
1. Cut your excuses in half and double your action
You can make excuses or you can change the world – but you can’t do both.
2. Leave the Herd
Most people spend the best hours of their day watching TV in a subdivision. If people don’t laugh at and criticize you, you probably aren’t doing much of significance. All geniuses were laughed at before they were revered.
3. Display Grit
You just don’t give up. You have ridiculous levels of persistence. You get knocked down and you get back up. You’ve got to fall in love with your vision. You don’t get “lucky” you create “lucky” by not giving up.
4. Get fit to be of use
The more fit you are, the more people you can help. The more fit you are, the more you’ll have the energy and the stamina to change the world.
When I realized that Innovate is not for ‘normal people’ that was the moment I knew I had to attend. The March event was incredible.
Leaving the herd may not be comfortable but as you can see in the picture above, there are people out here to welcome you.
Matt – here we don’t allow any “normal” people around here. Thanks for being part of the leaving the herd gang.
Great post Dan. It is amazing how all four bleed into each other. Anyone of the four will become our lid if we let it.
Zechariah – yeah I love these 4 “Secrets.” So easy to implement immediately.
You find this in the online world too Dan. People hope they can connect with someone at the top of their industry and hope that person shouts them out. It happens but very rarely and it’s not a strategy.
#4 about being fit and healthy hits home for me. The busier I get, the more healthy I need to stay and make sure I’m drinking plenty of water, eating right and exercising. Thanks for this article!
Lady J – Hey you look fit to me! But yes, it’s a great reminder for all of us. To make staying healthy a priority.
Thanks Dan! Trying to cut out so many processed foods…there’s a journey….:)
“Cut your excuses in half and double your action”
Great way of putting it.Thanks for the post, Dan.
You’re most welcome. That pretty much cuts to the heart of a lot of our lack of progress, doesn’t it?
Love it. Once I stopped making excuses, bring too tired, not having enough time, my young daughters needing a lot of my time, etc, I began my life long dream. I began to bake, and eventually sell. I do it on the side, as my career requires a lot of my time. However, I have given myself 1-5 years tonipen my bakery since I am slowly learning to bake, and I have no idea how I go about opening up a bakery/business. Haha!
“No more excuses” is the new motto at our house.
Sam,
As soon as we take full responsibility for where we are we can start making advances toward where we want to be. Sounds like you’re on track – cool!
I fell like I’m finally making some progress. I was terrified when I opened a Facebook page with the name of the bakery I am planning on opening. The whole weekend I was in doubt and full of fear. I finally thought to myself, “if I made it through USC and a masters degree in social work, I can survive this.”
I remember a podcast you did way back when, and you talked about a guy who was trying to open a cafe or bakery and had no money. I can’t remember what you said to him, and I can’t remember the podcast. Anyway, had it not been for your podcasts I wouldn’t have had the courage to start this new venture. Thanks Dan.
