What keeps people motivated in jobs that stink?
- Is tipping demeaning or a reasonable reward?
- How often do you put your full goals list in front of you and focus on it?
- I’d love to make a living creating and performing music, but I’m not seeing many ways to do that.
- When working in a field that is somewhat repetitive, what keeps people motivated?

Thanks for another great podcast. I always feel inspired after listening. Interesting discussion on tipping. When I have been in other countries where tipping is not customary it made things simpler. My initial desire was to do away with the practice, but after hearing some of the arguments in favor of tips, i’m not sure now. Restaurants aside, I guess my biggest problem is that I find myself tipping people because it is “expected” not because I really want to. I have even raced the airport shuttle driver to my bags so I would not feel obligated to tip them for moving my suitcase a few feet. A lot of times it is not the money, just the awkwardness of not knowing what to do.
Steve,
Yeah some situations are tough to measure. But I look for opportunities to surprise and bless people – whether it’s expected or not.
Great Podcast, just wanted to note two things about tipping. In Las Vegas, being a 24 hour town, the dealers and some wait staff in the larger restaurants pool the tips and pay out based on hours worked. The guys who hustle work the graveyard shift on a dead Monday, can’t hustle and collect great tips as the guys who work the hot and heavy Friday night crowd. So its shared evenly and helps with the taxes.
However, you ask about wait staff and what is their incentive to be better when there is no tip? Social Media is the new tip. Bad waiters as well as good are being outed on Yelp and Four Square. The business that wants to avoid the bad and keep the good will keep an eye on the staff as well as the comments on Social media. Managers will need to be more proactive in monitoring the floor and greeting customers
Mark – great point. Thanks for sharing.
