Risk and Reward
Without moving into areas where you’ve never been before – areas that cause some fear and anxiety – you can never have anything other than what you already have – what you’ve already experienced. So if you want something other than exactly what you have now, you have to be willing to look into that cave – and go ahead and step inside.
Episode #845 August 26, 2022
Hi this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable. This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die. Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show.
Thank you for being a listener of this podcast. I love hearing from you and being allowed to think through the questions we all have about finding or creating work that matters, for people who care.
I feel a sinking depression in the pit of my belly and in my heart just thinking about going to work tomorrow morning.
Your question seems to reflect a common theme.
Keep your salary job for about 6 months if you need to reduce some of the risk, but move forward with your new venture with confidence so you can earn the income you need to pay off your student loans. The attraction of unlimited income opportunities is often why people start something on their own.
Lean into your new venture with confidence.
I have a growing sense that preaching is not my passion.
I am confident that at 31 years old, you have enough indicators to help you determine your passion. I go through this process in 48 Days To the Work and Life You Love:
- What are your skills and abilities (identify two or three things that make you distinctive)
- What are your personality traits (85% of the process comes from looking inward)
But passion is more developed than discovered. I talk about this in more depth in my book Wisdom Meets Passion.
Don’t just think passion will show up. It comes from doing something with excellence. Don’t wait. Don’t be afraid of pursuing something to discover if you enjoy it and want to develop it into a real passion.
My problem is I don’t know what I really want to do.
Look at yourself. Don’t mistrust those things you see as hobbies right now. You may be able to leverage your interest in an area to create a substantial income around it.
I’m nervous about choosing the wrong career again.
When you reach transition points, you have to be willing to risk trying something new.
Talk to 5 people who are in human resources. Shadow someone who is doing human resources. That is the best way to learn about a new job or career.
Even if you do it for two or three years and decide that you don’t enjoy it, that’s okay. It may even be that you just don’t enjoy that particular application of human resources.
Identify 8 or 10 opportunities and explore them.
Should I start my own business? I can do this for myself and make much more money, but there are always big risks.
It is a very legitimate way to learn about something you want to do by working for someone else in that business.
Remember that you will need to take care of the business as well (finances, marketing, business, etc.)
Do a business plan to get a better idea of what you already have in place. Get the 48 Days Business Planning Guide with several other resources here.
I want to be my own boss. Can I make the business I work in my own without it feeling like a betrayal?
I would encourage you to talk with your uncle first. He may be totally open to the idea of it being your own business.
Anticipate this being a move forward that benefits both of you rather than anticipating a disagreement with your uncle.

So my questions for you today are:
What ‘cave’ are you peering into right now – seeing nothing but darkness but confident there’s something wonderful inside?
What other individuals or resources do you need to urge you into the cave?
What examples do you have from your past that are giving you the courage to attempt this?
