I’ve got some clear guidelines for you for positive thinking and a contest where you can tell us how you keep negatives out of your life – right here on the 48 Days Podcast. Your mind is like your house and you get to choose who you let in the door. How can you make sure positive thinking is what you let in?
Episode #840 July 22, 2022
Hi this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real-life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable. This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die. Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show.
Thank you for being a listener of this podcast. I love hearing from you and being allowed to think through the questions we all have about finding or creating work that matters, for people who care.
Questions:
Dan, you’re making me hate my job more. I think I should stop listening.
If you’re frustrated with what you’re doing, is it better to stick your head in the sand and not be exposed to material that’s going to give you inspiration and new ideas because you’re not going to be able to execute them anyway? If you’re content to stay where you are for the next 20 years, then yes, stop listening. But if you have any desire to move into something else, to be better, make more money, etc. then you really should continue listening. That’s where the seeds of positive thinking are planted. I recommend you do a time check. Most of us end up with about 48 hours a week which is pretty unaccounted for. I believe you can find 10-15 hours to work on a redirection. Use our 15-hour plan to start working on a new direction. Negative thoughts like, “I don’t have enough time,” “I work too much,” “I’m exhausted” are the types of negative thoughts that will trap you and keep you from moving forward. Try moving your thoughts toward positive thinking.Your podcast is inspiring! It has forced me to revisit a dream that I’ve considered giving up on.
Being responsible AND following your passion are not necessarily opposites. Think about all the things that are connected with racing that you could do that would allow you to be involved with it. List 20 things that would be possibilities for you.I have an ideal job but I really hate it.
I don’t like either/or choices. I like both/and choices. Don’t expect all of your fulfillment to come from your work. Work is just one tool available to you. Also, look at your life in seasons. With the age of your children, this may just be a season in your life. Later, you might not need to spend as much time with them and you would have the opportunity to work more.Dan, I’ve been in a rut for 10 years, maybe longer where I’m merely existing, going through the motions. I’m not happy about any area of my life.
It’s not enough just to accumulate more knowledge. You have to move past that to understanding and application. Instead of reading 5 books, read one and then do something with what you learned. We’re studying Deep Work by Cal Newport in the 48 Days Eagles Community. That book transformed my work week. After I read it, I took action and rescheduled my time so I could have periods of deep work.I have been with the same company for 7 years as a quality assurance clerk. The work is mundane and the leadership in the office is weak.
There are a lot of things you can do to learn how to sell, but first, negotiation needs to be a very comfortable process for you. But you can learn the skill of selling. Here are some resources I recommend: Zig Ziglar’s Secrets of Closing the Sale Tom Hopkins – How To Master the Art of Selling Brian Tracy – The Psychology of Selling Joe Stumpf – Referral Mastery You don’t have to be stuck in what you’re doing. You can decide to make a change. And if you believe it and let positive thinking into the house of your mind, you can make that transition. Also on today’s podcast:
