While unemployment is still at 9.4% the layoffs are declining. And now that the holidays are past and we are well into the New Year, those who have jobs are feeling more secure. The “virtuous cycle” has begun: more spending, rising company profits, increased hiring, more spending, etc.
Workers who survived the job cuts of the past three years have begun to conclude: “If they haven’t fired me by now, they’re not going to,” said Michael Koskuba, portfolio manager with Victory Capital Management.
But I wouldn’t get too complacent in this market. Even if you have a job you are being “interviewed” every single day. The day you aren’t adding value to the company is the day you’d better have your resume polished and ready to go.
