If you say, “I am in a career I hate,” this is a classic example of climbing a ladder that’s leaning against the wrong wall. Value knowing what you don’t want to do – and use that new knowledge to define what you do want to do. This is an ongoing process of knowing more and making adjustments along the way. And yes, your distaste of your current work will indeed lead to an earlier death.
Episode #898 June 02, 2023
Hi, this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real-life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable. This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die. Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show.
Questions:
Should I pay someone to do the tech & set up part of my new business or should I learn how to do it myself?
Stay in your Zone of Genius. Don’t try to do everything. It will slow down your progress and put a ceiling on what you can really achieve.
Nobody is a master of everything. You have to be very clear on what it is that you do really well.
Identify where you are incompetent, competent, excellent, and genius. Work to spend as much time as possible in your Zone of Genius.
Many of us get stuck in our areas of competence and excellence.
If you’re incompetent on a task, eliminate those things.
If you’re competent in a task, delegate those things — other people can do it better.
For the things I am excellent at doing, I create systems.
Dan, what’s your #1 suggestion for transitioning into more meaningful work?
Before you do anything, draw a line in the sand and take a fresh look inward — your skills and abilities, your personality tendencies, and your values, dreams and passions.
The more you understand yourself, the more you will position yourself for success.
I feel like I am working myself to death to advance a career I hate.
Stop climbing a ladder that’s leaning against the wrong wall.
Just because you have the ability to move up in your career, if you don’t enjoy it, draw a line in the sand. You have clarified what you don’t want to do.
I want to find some resources for possible small business ideas that I could start with my 12-year-old daughter.
Check out last week’s episode, where I talk about a lot of things people are doing.
The key is to help your daughter follow her curiosity.
Check out places like MyKidEntrepreneur.com. They have a list of 99 business ideas for kids that will make money.
We would ideally like to invest or start a business to replace 50 to 100% of my wife’s income which is $100,000.
Start with your curiosity. Then develop that into a passion. You see a need and you create a plan. You change that purpose into a promise and you get a profit from that — then you’re well on your way.

Resource:
I am often asked about building a business while having a limited amount of time – or even while still working a full-time job. With only 15 hours a week, you can make massive progress in 3-6 months if you invest those hours in FOUR areas of building a business. You can get an in-depth look at those four areas and how we walk through those with our Eagles Elite Members at 48days.com/elitecalendar
Key Takeaways:
- Follow your curiosity. Become really good at something. Then create a product or service based on that. Make a promise, and enjoy your profit.
- Be willing to make mistakes. That opens the door to a better future.
- Be willing to be misunderstood. Don’t try to please everyone.
- When you know better, you can do better.
