What does this antiwork movement really mean?
4.4 million people quit their jobs in October. The “antiwork movement” is growing rapidly. Is being “free” from work really “freedom?” Maybe Janis Joplin framed it best with “Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose.” In 48 Days to the Work You Love I quote Leo Tolstoy who discovered “that work, and not idleness is the indispensable condition of happiness for every human being.”
Episode #807 December 03, 2021
Hi this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real-life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable. This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die. Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show.
Can we balance work we love and work we don’t love?
I love the idea that you should try to spend 70% of your time doing work you love and things you really enjoy, but we can’t really expect to do work we love 100% of the time. Spending 30% of your time on “other things” we don’t enjoy so much seems very reasonable.
People are looking for a sense of Autonomy, Mastery and Purpose.
How can I sell my art to make a living?
Consider finding a niche and going deep with that as opposed to making your art appeal to so many different people.
How long should I stick with an idea before moving on?
When I set my goals for the new year, I ruthlessly eliminate 15% of the things I’ve been doing to make room for the new things I want to do. Some of those things are things I’m doing well.
Everything I start, I commit to doing it for at least a year. But after that, it’s on the bubble. I look at the traction that I’ve gotten and the enjoyment that I receive.
Then at the three-year mark, I look even more critically at things to determine if I want to continue.
I’m an airline pilot making great money but gone from my family 20 days a month.
Look for ways that you can duplicate your income now.
Go to Chapter 11 (page 243) in 48 Days To the Work and Life You Love. This will help you determine if you have the traits to be a successful entrepreneur.
If not, there are still opportunities for you based on your past experience and training.
How can I coach when I don’t have an office?
Check out shared working spaces like We Work, Co Work, Co Works, etc.
