America – are we still “free”?

Today is July 4th – and we are celebrating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.  This morning I was reading in SUCCESS magazine about the founder of that magazine, Orison Swett Marden.  In his personal letter sent to potential subscribers in 1922 he said,

********************************

Dear Dreamer:

Hitch your wagon to a STAR!

Grant your imagination full sway.

For never before in the history of the world has the Door of Opportunity been flung so wide.

The reconstruction – the rebuilding – the regeneration of the nations will bring NEW tasks with NEW problems and BIG prizes for those who solve them.

American is a land of rich tomorrows! – the land of OPPORTUNITY.

And those who are PREPARED to win, have a better chance than ever before to achieve success under the Stars and Stripes….

Your FUTURE can be as splendid and as glorious as you will to make it.

So read – decide – ACT!

Earnestly yours,

Orison S. Marden, Editor

********************************

This is just as he wrote it.  At the top of the page he had a quotation:

“Impossibilities are merely the half-hearted efforts of quitters.”

This was written before the Great Depression, before the internet, and before computers.

Do you think that Marden would still say that in 2011 we “have a better chance than ever before to achieve success under the Stars and Stripes” – or was it easier in 1922?
