What university graduates need to know

What university graduates need to know

A listener just asked if I were invited to give a university’s commencement address, what would I tell the graduates? Would I tell it in such a way that would cause me to get booed off stage? How would I present the truth to these young people?  Knowing my concerns about current academic degrees, how would I present a positive message for moving forward?

3 Key Points:

  1. Do not decide, now, what will not work for your life—you become your thoughts.
  2. Our destiny comes from our own decisions.
  3. Become the person you want to be, today, and this is who you’ll be tomorrow.

  • Elaine’s Concern,
I have 3 points to consider.

    1) How Paul was engaging in the Roman world is helpful in her case. Paul told Christians to pay their taxes and to pray for their rulers, even though those rulers considered themselves demigods and commanded at least a degree of worship from the common people. What a person or a company does with the profits of their company is not by necessity a concern of my conscious.

    2) When dealing with Christian freedoms and the eating of meat, we were instructed if the person does not announce that the meat was sacrificed to an idol, eat and do not be troubled. I may be ignorant of how ebay and paypal go about their business, but their support of planned parent hood at this point is something which is drudged up, not a public announcement to the degree of “.2% of your transaction will be going to the funding of our partners at planned parenthood.” I would venture that if we really dug into their charitable giving, we would also find that they give to schools, 3rd world humanitarian needs, and the digging of wells for the poor. This being said, i’m not saying abortion is nothing, i’m saying that i cannot expect a non-christian to live according to Christian values (I Cor 5 and 6).

    3) Finally, if these observations do not sooth your conscience, from a biblical perspective you need to find another way to sell or make a living. You can run sales on your website, ssl, and your bank. But becareful not to dig into how they (web host, web management system, personal bank) use their profits, or your conscience may bind you into not using these methods either.

But Paul used the roads paved by Rome, even though a portion of their income was devoted to idolatry which was clearly wrong.
