Help me put my wife in business

Here’s a podcast listener question this week:

“Dan, my wife mentioned recently she wants to learn to decorate cakes, and since I’ve been listening to you, I immediately thought of making it into a business that we could run together and be able to spend more time together. My wife, however doesn’t see or believe that this is feasible. My question is, what is the best way to show her the potential? Should I work up a business plan? Find ways to market a few of her cakes once she gets going?”

Winners Never Quit – Baloney!

We’ve all heard the old adage, “Winners never quit, quitters never win.”  Is that really true?  Does that mean that if you’re driving from Detroit to Miami and you suddenly realize you’re actually headed for Savannah you would simply continue on?  Or even speed up?  Or just “try harder?” Of course not – you would immediately correct your direction, even if it meant going back to Atlanta to get back on the right road.

Why is it that in jobs or businesses people often believe that if they just persist, somehow things will get better?  And that they need to be loyal and never show signs of “giving up?”

Here’s a question from Susan:
“I would like to know what to do when you are working so hard and everything seems to continue to fail. Do you change plans or what?”

Are you releasing “the voice of God?”

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart would have had a birthday this week.  He was born on January 27th, 1756.  By the age of three, he was picking out chords on the family piano.  Mozart’s father was an accomplished composer himself but pretty much gave up teaching little Wolfgang by the time he hit five years old.  The little guy resisted formal training and just seemed to have an innate connection to the music that went beyond traditional learning.

In fact, his ease of creating musical works gained him the scorn of his contemporaries.  While fictionalized, the movie Amadeus reveals the jealous and angry feelings of Antonio Salieri, another composer in Vienna, Austria at the time:

Don’t sabotage your power

“You have very little morally persuasive power with people who can feel your underlying contempt.”  - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Whether it’s:

  • your commitment to Occupy Wall Street
  • negotiating with your boss
  • relating to your spouse
  • teaching teenagers
  • evangelizing the natives, or
  • gathering support for your politics

this principle is one to remember.
