Sign of the times: “
Today I went to buy a toaster and was given a bank as a free
gift.”
Last night I talked to
a gentleman who has been a real estate appraiser for 15 years. As
everyone knows, the real estate market has slowed down, thus his
income has dropped dramatically. He told me he wanted to switch to
a “residual” income – lots of it – and
fast.
This is a great time to develop a residual income idea (one where
it’s not just an exchange of time for a paycheck – but
where income continues even while you're on the beach). In the last
week I’ve talked to people who are baking “better than
crack” chocolate pies, writing great country songs,
developing continuing education courses for pharmacists, producing
a gardening video, writing a book on spiritual growth, and
developing a workshop for people transitioning out of church staff
positions. All of these are ideas I love and all have great
financial potential. BUT – none of them will produce
“lots of income fast.” All of these will need an 18-24
month ramp-up time, even with a clear plan of action.
And that’s where most people abandon their best ideas. The
desire for making money fast will always push you down on the scale
of financial opportunity. If you need money quickly go get a job at
McDonalds today and get your paycheck on Friday for your $8.00 an
hour contribution. But you can’t start writing today and get
a $300,000 advance for your book on Friday. That requires lots of
time invested with no short-term financial return.
I understand if you need money quickly – just don’t
think you have to make an “either/or” decision. Make an
“and” decision. Take the job at Home Depot today AND
start writing that book proposal tonight. Two years from now
you’ll be ready to step into a higher level of success than
most people ever experience. Making a decision to address your
immediate need does not need to shut the door on your long-term
ultimate dream work.
Many people sit in a college classroom for four years with little
focus and exit poorly equipped for any success. If you spend only
4-5 hours a week for a 4-yr period with determination and a clear
focus you will absolutely put yourself into an elite group of high
achievers. The November/December issue of the Futurist magazine says the
average American spends 2.6 hours per day surfing ch
anne
ls on TV. Take that time and
you’ll see results that will change your bank account in 90
days.
You might think that
with the current economy scare everyone is just hunkering down,
hanging on to whatever they have. Not true! We are being bombarded
with people who are ready to jump into their dream work. This
includes factory workers, bank employees, real estate
professionals, but also physicians, dentist, pharmacists, pastors
and accountants.
I’ll have some exciting stories to share in the next few
weeks about what some of these people are doing to move into work
that is fulfilling, purposeful – and profitable.
Here’s a recent USA Today article that captures the essence
of what we’re seeing. Midlifers
live their dreams.
Each week I create a new online radio podcast
— that you can hear in iTunes or at the 48 Days Online Radio
Show link below.
I begin this podcast by responding to some comments I’ve
received this week – indicating that I have my head in the
clouds and have lost touch with reality. A couple people are
convinced I don’t know what it’s really like “out
there.” Thus the question is, “When circumstances are
tough, should we just ‘be realistic’ and recognize that
our dreams will never be accomplished, or should we continue doing
the things that are proven to lead to success?”
Then I address:
Negotiating
a compensation package as a church staff member

With
the economy in such an unstable condition, does it make sense
to start a business now?
Dan,
I can’t take action because I can't get clear on what I
want. I have read, sat quietly, asked others but nothing grabs
me.

Many of you are asking about my personal coaching. Yes, I still
work with 2-3 people a month. And yes, we get a lot of requests. I
screen each request and either contact you myself – or refer
you to a matching coach in our network. I take seriously the
confidence shown by the requests and make sure each one is given
personal attention. If you want to review the options and give me
some basic information I’ll be honored to evaluate it and
give you some feedback. Just go to Personal Coaching and
