"A realist is more correct about things in life than an optimist. But the optimist seems to have more friends and much more fun." Megan, Age 14
"I'm a box full of parts that don't seem to match!"
This is actually a quote from one of my workshop attendees. The young man went on to describe how he had the ability to do a lot of things but had never found a clear focus for his career. This time of year we always see a great number of college graduates who describe the same feeling. "Now that I have this degree, what am I supposed to do?" Having a degree does not necessarily lead a person in a clear direction. That's why we know that 10 years after graduation, 80% of college graduates are working in something totally unrelated to their college degree.
Rather than being alarmed by this fact, we simply need to put the degree in perspective. A college degree is not intended to create a narrow career path from which there is no escape. In a broader sense it is part of the maturing process; it shows self-discipline; it expands one's horizons and options; it provides new social contacts; and it likely stimulates some possible career alternatives.
Career choices are not for the most part logical and rational – the good ones are much more intuitive and clarified by life experience. That's why those of you who are already 35-40+ are in a better position to make good career decisions. What you have done in the real world has been preparing you to make clearer, more meaningful decisions than what you could possibly have done at age 18-20. Career decisions made at 18 seldom define the most fulfilling options 20 years later. Life is the ultimate educational experience that helps us make good decisions. And keep in mind that academic institutions are often safe, socially acceptable places to hide out while procrastinating having to make real choices.

********************************* "When you choose a career, you have got to know what it is you want to do, or else someone is going to sell you a bill of goods somewhere along the line that can do irreparable damage to your self-esteem, your sense of worth, and your stewardship of the talents that God gave you." Richard Bolles, "What Color is Your Parachute?"
This week's OuttaWork prize package winner is Jerry Lundin from Glasgow, KY. Here's his story:
I was the Human Resource Manager of a small, privately held company. In January, the decision was made that we would need to layoff employees. I was involved and took the lead with the managers on who and how this would happen. These were all good people who would be affected and I wanted to treat them with dignity, respect and compassion as I told them they would be losing their job. I spent some sleepless nights rehearsing how I would tell each person, how they might react and how I might help them with this news. On the Friday this was scheduled to happen, I met with each person separately, along with their manager, to go over the details. I had put together a package of information about their benefits, unemployment, rehire status and comments about their commitment and work for the company.
To say the least, this was a very emotional time. I started at 6am meeting with the first individual and finished with the last person about 11am. I was emotionally drained from all of this and was about to call by boss to ask if I could take the rest of the day off.
Before I could pick up the phone he walked in, sat down and said there was one more person to add to the list. It was me! I never saw this coming.

How's that for a reward for a job well done? Here are some other brief snippets from submissions this week:
I'm still struggling to survive on a day to day and week to week basis. At this point, I don't even have money for gas to look for a job & my car is falling apart.
I am 44 years young. I've had more jobs than I can count. I am more than capable of getting myself into just about any job I want, and giving 110% while I'm in it, but then I feel the winds of change blowing me away again.
I never left working, when I lost my job. I left existing. And Began living, with new tasks at hand that are my work, THE WORK OF LIVING, GOD's way. NOT the way of our Society.
Hi Dan, I'm out of work – I was in a job that was over my head and I hated, causing severe anxiety attacks that required medication. I resigned from a job making $68,000 a year. The problem is I still don't "know what I want to be when I grow up".
You can still get your name in the hat for next week's drawing. Just send me a quick note about how you lost your job to: outtawork@48Days.com
Incidentally, I am planning on doing a free one-hour teleseminar on Tuesday evening, May 26st at 7:00 PM CDT for all of you who are out of work right now. Watch for details – we'll set it up so you can listen on your phone or just click on a link and listen on your computer.
I'll cover some points on how to make yourself a top candidate when there are a lot of contenders, and how to recognize new work models that may lead to more income anyway.
I begin this podcast asking for your feedback. While the podcast is extremely successful in terms of numbers, I'm always looking for ways to make it better and more useful.
Should I change the intro music?
Should I answer more questions with shorter answers or fewer questions with more in-depth answers?
Should I have podcasts with only one theme (e.g. eBay business, coaching, taxes and licenses, etc.)?
Should I have guests periodically – with a particular theme?
Just shoot any ideas you have to askDan@48Days.com --- Thanks so much!
And here are some sample questions answered this week:
I am interested in doing some reselling. I'm concerned about doing it legally and without a lot of overhead. Do I need a permit to do this? Beyond that, do I need to get a taxpayer ID / form a company to do this? Do I have sales tax or other tax obligations?
My question is this- have you considered an artist seminar out at the Barn? I have heard you say that you have worked with artists on how to get their careers on track and the different options of marketing, agents, galleries and so forth. Do you have anything like that in the works?
Dan, my dream has come true!!! I will be managing this salon, recruiting the stylists, working my own hours and I WORK FOR MYSELF. Can you imagine that in the land of FAMINE, there is still a God that can bless and open doors despite my circumstances.
I'm 53 years old, bored with my job, not learning anything new, not intellectually stimulating. I don't know what my God given talents, skills are. And I wonder how do I go about finding out what my passions are, what my Goal should be. What is it that God wants me to be? Please help.

********************************* Need Marketing Ideas for your business?
Ten years ago Seth Godin got his publisher to agree that he could give away the first four chapters of his book, Permission Marketing. They agreed because they didn't think it would work to help sales. Millions of people surprised those publishers. And you can still get these four chapters just by going to www.permission.com. His marketing of the book still works and the ideas he shares will still work for your business. I just got it again to review myself.
********************************* ConGRADulations Package
Do you know someone getting ready to graduate from high school or college? Yes, you could get that person a necktie or bottle of cologne – but how about something that can make them stand out in a sea of job candidates. Ashley has put a super GRADuation package together, full of tips and inspiration: ConGRADulations Package

When Peters learned that he was being fired, he went to see the head of human resources. "Since I've been with the firm for so long," he said, "I think I deserve at least a letter of recommendation."
The human resources director agreed and said he'd have the letter that next day. The following morning, Peters found the letter on his desk. It read, "Jonathan Peters worked for our company for eleven years. When he left us, we were very satisfied."
