In last weeks' newsletter I put this little note in about being out of work:
Okay, here's a little contest for you. If you really are out of work right now, send a brief note to outtawork@48Days.com explaining how you lost your job and what you are moving TO. We'll draw one name per week through May 31st to receive our The Ultimate Fresh Start Package to help launch you into the next season of your career.
About 10 minutes after the newsletter went out, the messages started rolling in. While many are very sad and disheartening, I was also thrilled to see the optimism sneak in – even for those of you who are still in the process of clarifying the next step. Here are just a few snippets:
From now on, I am moving toward listening to my heart and soul.
At first I was stunned, then upset, then I thought, wait a minute . . . this is really a blessing.
I am so excited about the happy and prosperous times ahead for this year . . . Life IS Good!
This “in-between” time has given me the opportunity to get started with launching an independent training and career coaching practice, which has been a dream of mine.
I was a journalist for 10 years, and was laid off. But that's okay. It's truly turned into a great period of refreshment in my life.
I had secretly wished that I would be the one to be released, but when it happened, I was still shocked . . . I recognize that we're in the middle of a recession, but this was the kind of situation that always happened to someone else....not me. While it sounds cliche, this was truly a blessing.
I was laid off on 9 March 2009 with no warning after working for a major manufacturer for 11.5 years. When I told my wife, her response was, "Good. Now you can go and do something you want to do."
I had a great interview today, and another with another company tomorrow that looks like it could be my dream job – onward and upward!!
At first the loss of my job was very unsettling, however, in time I have come to believe that this is God's way of getting me on to something bigger and better.
I was a little surprised that they beat me to the punch, but I thanked them saying "I really appreciate this, I really do".

The old days of finding one company and methodically moving up the ladder in position and compensation, are essentially over. As we're seeing with the massive layoffs already this year the chances of staying with one company for 30 years and getting that gold watch are very slim. When the 78 yr.-old chairman retires, the company is likely to replace him with a 27 yr.-old from the outside rather than with the next person in line at the company.
Thus, we are seeing a new model for career development. Rather than the vertical climb with one company, people are staying 2-3 years and moving on to another company -- even in the good times. Today's career path resembles a maze rather than the proverbial ladder. Just be clear; this does not mean constantly starting over – it simply means progressing on your career development with multiple companies.
This is neither good nor bad. It's just different. But it does require that you have a clear sense of direction. Otherwise you will end up feeling like a recent client of mine who described his career path as being a “ball in a pinball machine”. Keep clear on your (1) Skills & Abilities, (2) Personality Traits, and (3) Values, Dreams & Passions. Knowing these will provide a sense of continuity in the midst of the inevitable change.
I am hearing from an increasing number of people around the world who describe the inspiration they get from these weekly podcasts. I continue to enjoy the opportunity of responding to your questions like these:
Reading your book has confirmed that I'm really not a team player. I'm happiest being the ”resident expert” or “resident consultant” and being in a position where what I do impacts others but doesn't really require me to interact with them all that much. At age 59, with 35 years on the administrative side of the healthcare industry, how do I market myself so that my experience and solitary nature are seen as advantages?
I started back to school part time in January toward my dream of becoming a speech therapist. Is taking a big step backwards ( lower level job) to get where I want to go really as bad as people are trying to convince me that it is?
I love what I do, but I only represent one company. I have the opportunity to go on my own and potentially at least double my income AND represent many companies. My question is, historically I've been a "poor dad" type who looks towards the long term "stable" position. When you look at opportunities, do you look long term or short term?
I want to teach single mothers on welfare how to find their purpose, get rid of debt and grow wealth, and not depend on the government to take care of them in the long haul. I am currently a laid off mother of three on welfare. How can I do this with no money, experience, debt, and while I don't feel empowered myself? Where do I start?
I have been looking for jobs for the last year and I am still in the same dead end job. I am at my wits end and have basically decided that by my birthday of next year I will kill myself if I am still here; that is at least one goal that I can attain at this point. I don't know what my purpose is, don't know how to find it and surely at this point am tired of searching.
