Welcome and What's New

Dear Coach,

In anticipation of the New Year I am looking at what I will add and what I will stop doing (see Item #1). I am adding a blog where I will be posting short items related to finding better opportunities. As we are moving toward information and resources that are quicker and more convenient, this newsletter may become shorter in format. The Dan Miller Blog will allow you to comment and become more a part of our sharing community. We'll have audio and video clips for a more unique involvement. You can subscribe to be notified of my posts – just part of our changing to be more current with the changing technology.

Last Minute Christmas Specials
Yes, many of you jumped on the chance to be in the drawing for the Garmin GPS. If you order a Christmas package by December 19th – we’ll get it shipped via UPS and put your name in the hat. Check out our Christmas Specials. Give a gift of hope – and maybe win a little something for yourself.

I sometimes think we expect too much of Christmas Day. We try to crowd into it the long arrears of kindliness and humanity of the whole year. As for me, I like to take my Christmas a little at a time, all through the year. And thus I drift along into the holidays - let them overtake me unexpectedly - waking up some fine morning and suddenly saying to myself: "Why, this is Christmas Day!" David Grayson

1. Zero-Based Planning – Start 2008 With A Clean Slate

Management guru Peter Drucker always recommended that you examine every part of your business regularly to determine if there is anything you are doing now that you wouldn’t do again if you could start over.

What if you did this Zero-Based planning for your LIFE? If you could wipe the slate clean on January 1st, and look at your life in this way, what would you change? The real hallmark of truly successful people is not that they do more but that they can decide what they are going to stop doing. What are you going to Stop Doing on January 1st -- to release the success you want?

If you need a planning guide, here’s my brief outline for deciding what success will look like for you in 2008: My Life in 2008

Here are a few of the questions I addressed this week:

  • I'm reasonably happy in my job, however I feel somewhat limited. In order to advance to the top of my particular field, a Master's Degree is required. I already have $10,000 in student loans from my bachelor's degree, and don't feel comfortable taking out another loan to go to school. I'm considering changing careers or perhaps changing roles and staying in my industry, but something still seems amiss. Ultimately, I feel that I am not maximizing my gifts. Do you have any suggestions?

  • Dan, I want to start a small part-time business with my brother, he is into music and is very creative when it comes to designs but, I’m into fitness and working out, football and movies; what would you suggest that we do?

  • I was very excited about the 48 days book but was a little disappointed after I finished it. I have never been able to determine what my calling is or even the best job or career for me. I could not settle on a degree in college for the same reason and ended up with liberal arts degree ten years ago. ….I feel stuck because my experience is in one field. The 48 days book seems to be very helpful giving direction to someone who has at least a small idea where they are going. This isn't me. …Did I miss something in the book or am I just going to have to settle with something that pays the bills?

  • Dear Solomon…How and where in the world do you find the wisdom to answer all of these situations for these people desperate in changing their lives? Solomon asked for wisdom from God and was blessed with it in abundance…so much that he accumulated more wealth than any human being could imagine. Dan…being a clinical psychologist is one thing but being able to map out a career strategy for these individuals is mind boggling…especially since the majority of them have no idea what they want to be or do in their lives. How do you do it?????

  • I wanted to get your opinion on a company I have recently come across. It is YTB Travel. It is a multi level marketing company and online travel agency. I was involved in other MLM's with not much success, but nothing like the compensation packages YTB has. Could you please give me any direction to go good or bad. I really appreciate your time.

  • Just this week I bought and listened to your Write to the Bank. I think it is wonderful, BUT I am a 61 year old former elementary teacher with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia for 23 years now. …I used to be a creative and high energy person. All that I retain of that oomph is my mind now. ….I'm burned out but need to latch on to something quickly to use my Master's in Counseling, moderate writing ability and life experience to turn my life around financially. Any truly practical ideas for a desperate situation??

You can submit your question right now – I’ll work as many in as possible for this week's broadcast. 48 Days Online Radio

3. Just call me Slave Boy

In filling out vendor, banking, and credit forms, there always comes the line where I have to fill in my company title. I’m not particularly fond of President, CEO or head honcho, so I normally put Creative Thinker. That’s a title I feel good about.

Recently I’ve seen an increase in interesting titles from a wide variety of companies. It appears others are looking for titles that are more appealing than administrative assistant, accountant, teller or vice president.

Here are some I’ve seen recently:

Persuasion Architect, Shrinkage Manager, Marketing Maven, Software Evangelist, Burger Engineer, Chief Environmental Officer, and Chief Emotional Officer.

I saw this one in Fast Company. Tim Cleaver, with Amazing Online Magazine, calls himself Slave Boy. Cleaver is at the beck and call of everyone from designers to senior project managers. So he has given himself a new title. Will he put “Slave Boy” on his resume? “Sure. If a company doesn’t want to hire me because I used to have a goofy title, I probably don’t want to work there anyway.”

I resist using the Department of Labor’s “Dictionary of Occupational Titles” for mature adults looking for new careers. Most are pretty traditional – but in checking there I see even the government is getting up to speed in recognizing some unusual titles. Here are just a few – I am not making any of these up:

Ear Muff Assembler, Ecclesiastical Art Metal Worker, Drawstring Knotter, Dope Mixer, Doorshaker, Doll Eye Setter, Dinkey Operator, Butt Maker, Breast Buffer, Brain Picker, Asparagus Sorter, Head Switcher, Toe Pounder, Umbrella Tipper, and of course Easter Bunny.

They are listed in the 660 pages of DOL job titles. You can check them out yourself at:
U.S. Department of Labor Dictionary of Occupational Titles

These are more creative than I could make up. So, obviously, you can give yourself most any title. What would you like your title to be this next year?

4. Humor -- Oh Well

Two Tennessee good ole boys went out into the woods searching for a Christmas tree.

After hours and hours of subzero temperatures and a few close calls with hungry wolves, one guy turned to the other and said,

"I'm chopping down the next tree I see. I don't care whether it's decorated or not!"
