Joanne and I are on a Caribbean cruise this week, resting in places like Belize and Cozumel along the way. We will be visiting a former coaching client at his scuba shop in Cozumel. With the mix of work and play we really get to live out the quote below:

“The master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his information and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence at whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he is always doing both.” -- James Michener

1. Eagles Fly Free -- Turkeys get eaten

(I’ve never been able to identify an author for this story, and have taken the liberty to modify it over the years.)

Once upon a time in the long, long ago the Eagle and the Turkey were very good friends. Everywhere they went these friends went together. It was not uncommon for people to look up and see the Eagle and the Turkey flying side by side through the air.

One day while flying, the Turkey said to the Eagle: “Let’s drop down and get a bite to eat. My stomach is growling.” “Sounds like a good idea to me,” replied the Eagle. So the two birds glided down to earth, saw several animals eating, and decided to join them. They landed next to the Cow. The Cow was busy eating corn, but noticed that the Eagle and the Turkey were soon sitting on the ground next to her. “Welcome,” said the Cow. “Help yourself to the corn.”

This took the two birds by surprise. They were not accustomed to having other animals share their food quite so readily. “Why are you willing to share your corn with us?” asked the Eagle. “Oh, we have plenty to eat here. Mr. Farmer gives us all we want,” replied the Cow. With that invitation, the Eagle and The Turkey jumped in and ate their fill. When they finished, the Turkey asked more about Mr. Farmer. “Well,” said the Cow, “he grows all our food. We don’t have to work for the food at all.”

“You mean,” said the Turkey, “that Mr. Farmer simply gives you all you want to eat?” “That’s right,” said the Cow. “Not only that, but he gives us a place to live.” The Turkey and the Eagle were shocked! They had never heard of such a thing. They had always had to search for food and work for shelter.

When it came time to leave, the Turkey and the Eagle began to discuss the situation. “Maybe we should just stay here,” said the Turkey. “We can have all the food we want without working. And that barn over there sure beats those nests we have been building. Besides, I’m getting tired of always having to work for a living.”

“I don’t know about all this,” said the Eagle. “It sounds too good to be true. I find it hard to believe that one can get something for nothing. Besides, I kinda like flying high and free through the air. And providing for food and shelter isn’t so bad. In fact, I find it quite challenging.”

Well, the Turkey thought it over and decided to stay where there was free food and shelter. But the Eagle decided that he loved his freedom too much to give it up, and enjoyed the consistent challenge of making his own living. So, after saying good-bye to his old friend the Turkey, the Eagle set sail for the unknown adventure.

Everything went fine for the Turkey. He ate all he wanted. He never worked. He grew fat and lazy. But then one day he heard the farmer’s wife mention that Thanksgiving was coming in the next few days and it would be nice to have roast turkey for dinner. Hearing that, the Turkey decided it was time to check out and rejoin his good friend Mr. Eagle. But when he attempted to fly he found that he had grown too fat and lazy. Instead of being able to fly, he could only flutter. So on Thanksgiving Day the farmer’s family sat down to roast Turkey.

When you give up the challenges of life in pursuit of “security,” you may give up your freedom.

Here are just a few of the questions answered in this podcast:

  • I read your book and I'm glad I did. On Oct. 25th I lost my job of over 17 years (it was a low pay 'only $9.30 an hr.' go no where job as a uniformed security officer) and after trying to dispute the termination the company let me go anyway. So now I'm waiting to hear from unemployment. Any advice, suggestions or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

  • Thank you for all you do. I enjoy and look forward to getting your newsletter each week. How do I find my purpose? I'm just average and don't have any special skills. I've worked in an office my whole adult life doing a variety of things from billing to accounting assistance.

  • I enrolled full time at the local university and I am loving going to school. I lost my job recently due to downsizing. When I did have to go to work from 8-6 M-F it was very difficult with my full-time school schedule. Do you have ideas of how I can generate income to support my family while I'm going to school that will allow for more flexibility?

  • My 10 year-old daughter is a very talented writer, by her teacher's consensus. She has currently written about 4-5 children's aged books and would like to have them seen to see if they are good enough for publication. How should we proceed?

  • What are your overall opinions of MLM businesses? We all know people who have been scammed by these businesses and have lost a lot of money along with destroying relationships. Do you think MLM businesses are a legitimate way to go into business for yourself and to make an honest living?

You can submit your question right now – I’ll work as many in as possible for this week's broadcast. AskDan@48Days.com

3. For The Want Of A Smile

This is a time of year when many people become depressed over the state of their lives. Some decide that living itself is just too difficult. The Golden Gate bridge is the world’s leading suicide location. Every two weeks, on average, someone ends their life here. At least twelve hundred people have been seen jumping or have been found in the water since the bridge opened in 1937, including Roy Raymond, the founder of Victoria’s Secret, in 1993, and Duane Garrett, a Democratic fund-raiser and a friend of Al Gore’s, in 1995.

Dr. Jerome Motto had a patient who jumped in the mid seventies. “I went to this guy’s apartment afterward with the assistant medical examiner,” he says. “The guy was in his thirties, lived alone, pretty bare apartment. He’d written a note and left it on his bureau. It said, ‘I’m going to walk to the bridge. If one person smiles at me on the way, I will not jump.’”

Wow – what a simple gift. How many people did he meet that day? What if I had been one of them? It doesn’t take money to give some of the season’s most precious gifts. Be very aware of those around you especially during this time of year. Give the gift of a smile – ten times each day.

Yes, that's Joanne and me with our precious granddaughter, Clara Isabell. It's impossible to not smile in her presence. She is nothing but joy and happiness.

4. Humor -- Christmas Spirit

A minister of a church loved peach brandy. One of his congregants would make him a bottle each Christmas. One year, when the minister went to visit his friend, hoping for his usual Christmas present, he was not disappointed as he unwrapped the homemade brandy. However, his friend told him that he had to thank him for the peach brandy from the pulpit the next Sunday.

So the next Sunday the minister suddenly remembered that he had to make a public announcement that he was being supplied alcohol from a member of the church. That morning, his friend sat in the church with a grin on his face, waiting to see the minister's embarrassment.

The minister climbed into the pulpit and said, "Before we begin, I have an announcement. I would very much like to thank my friend, Joe, for his kind gift of peaches... and for the spirit in which they were given!"
