= Dear = kevin,

Joanne and I had a great time in New York City =96 met with my Random House= team on the upcoming release of my new book, consulted with a client on he= r options, spent a day in a Seth Godin seminar, saw Hairspray, went = to a midnight rooftop party, walked through Central Park (in photo), and at= e way too much fine food.

I love the combination of work and play that I am privileged to enjoy. It = really is possible to blend work and play =96 and to enjoy both equally. <= br>

Perhaps this James Michener quote sums it up best:

The master in the art of living makes little distinction between his = work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his in= formation and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows w= hich is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence at whatever he d= oes, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he = is always doing both.

= 1. I Know 'The Secret'=20 <= /TD>
= There has been a lot of talk this summer regarding the book = and movie The Secret. The basic premise involves a centuries old pr= inciple called The Law of Attraction. The Secret author Rhonda Byrn= e and her co-presenters maintain that everything that happens in our lives = is a result of our thinking. So if you want a new Mercedes in your drivewa= y, all you have to do is Ask, Believe and Receive. And the counterpart is = that if you have a disaster in your life, something you were thinking attra= cted that event. So if you are walking under a tree and a bird poops on yo= u, your thinking caused that to happen.

This week Joanne and I were in New York City. After a busy day of meetings= we were strolling down Broadway when we came to the Neil Simon theatre whe= re the famous Hairspray is playing. Joanne had checked in advance = and was told the tickets are sold out weeks in advance =96 and I didn=92t w= ant to pay the $110 per ticket anyway. But I suggested we walk over to the= theatre just to check out the possibilities. The young guy out front said= no tickets were available =96 but they do have a drawing each evening for = a few choice seats. The drawing takes place at 5:30. A quick glance at my= watch let me know it was 5:26. Joanne and I quickly filled out a slip and= dropped it in the container. We stepped back on the sidewalk and waited f= or 4 minutes.

Well, you can see where this is going. Yes, we got tickets -- $25 each for= front row center seats =96 for that night at 8:30. We then walked down to= Ruby Foos for a wonderful dinner and came back to see the show.

Now, what happened there? Was it luck, fate, God=92s providence, coinciden= ce, positive thinking or an alignment of the stars? How do you explain the= good things in your life? How do you understand the bad? Do you expect g= ood things =96 or are you convinced bad things are going to happen?

I wish space permitted a fuller treatment of this important topic. Persona= lly, I do expect good things to happen. But then I go to work to increase = the chances. Perhaps getting tickets was just an example of the Biblical p= rinciple =96 You have not because you ask not. (James 4:2) I=92m go= ing to keep expecting good things in my life. Show tickets are a small dea= l compared to some of the others I=92ve got in my sights.

What are you expecting?

= 3. When to Leave a Job=20 <= /TD>
= Here=92s an email question from a reader on =96 when to leav= e a job.

Dan, I know that you and Dave Ramsey are close, and I listen to you both= and notice a lot of consistencies. One thing Dave mentioned the other day = was that people need to occasionally look at their possessions, like a boat= , and decide if they would buy it all over again. If the answer is ever "n= o", then they should sell it.

I was listening to one of your podcasts from the spring and a man was askin= g how to know when to move on from a job. Is it fair to say the same about= a job? Should you ask yourself if, knowing what you know about the job whi= le you are in it, would you accept the position again? Thanks, Buffy
=

Here=92s my response:

Buffy, Yes, that's a great way to frame it. It=92s healthy at any point to= ask yourself that question. Knowing what I know now, would I choose this = job, this house, this car, or this wardrobe? And recognize that you change= over time. You are not the person you were 5 or 10 years ago. So yes, as= k yourself if you were in the job search now -- would you want the job you = currently have. If not, it may be an appropriate time to do a job search.<= br>
That doesn=92t mean you made a mistake in the first place =96 it just ackno= wledges that you are not stagnant =96 you are becoming a more experienced, = more intelligent and more spiritually alert person. So knowing what you kn= ow now, what changes are you going to make =96 starting today =96 to take a= dvantage of the stronger position you=92re in? And to move to a higher lev= el of success?

Sincerely, Dan

Remember when Rosa Parks decided she was tired of playing by racist rules, = and of denying what her heart told her was right? She decided -- "I = will no longer act on the outside in a way that contradicts the truth that = I hold deeply inside. I will no longer act as if I were less than the whol= e person I know myself inwardly to be."

Your situation may not be that dramatic =96 but if change is indicated, gra= b your new seat on the bus!

= A city boy moved to the country and bought a mule from an ol= d farmer. The farmer agreed to deliver the mule the next day. The next day,= the farmer drove up and said, "Sorry, but I have some bad news. The mule d= ied."

"Well, then, just give me my $100 back."

"Can't do that. I went and spent it already."

"Okay then. Just unload the mule."

"What ya gonna do with him?"

"I'm going to raffle him off."

"You can't raffle off a dead mule!"

"Sure I can. Watch me. I just won't tell anybody he's dead."

A month later the farmer met up with the city boy and asked, "Whatever happ= ened with that dead mule?"

"I raffled him off. I sold a hundred tickets at two dollars a piece and mad= e a ninety-eight dollar profit."

"Didn't anyone complain?"

"Just the guy who won. So I gave him his two dollars back."

Need a new home?
Barbara Rankin Nolan is working with me in the Eagles Club Coaching process. As a recent widow she i= s moving into a new season in her life, and needs to part with her beautifu= l home. The home is called Blythewood and is a beautiful 1825 Federal Colo= nial home with barns and property located in the heart of the Hudson Valley= , 90 miles north of NYC. It is close to the village of Millbrook, but comp= letely private with 25 acres of park-like surroundings, including woods, fi= elds, pond, and views of the Catskill Mountains. It has been the perfect p= lace to raise children, tend gardens, hike on small trails, collect antique= s, perform musical afternoons in the Music Room, and host an endless number= of happy reunions and neighborhood get-togethers. With children grown, it= is now the time to pass the care of our lovely home into that of another. = As a perfect retreat from the city, either for businesses or families, Bly= thewood is a stately, elegant, and warm, inviting property to consider! If you are look= ing for a gorgeous retreat, this may be the ideal match. See Blythewood here.
