= Dear = Kevin,

I just realized it was seven years ago this week that I started the 48 Days= newsletter -- to 67 friends and family. Thanks for being part of the phen= omenal growth that seven years has brought. This is issue #368 without mis= sing a week.

Summer is nearly gone. Friends are squeezing in last minute vacations befo= re the kids will go back to school. Change is all around us =96 colors on = the leaves are starting to change, new business opportunities are exploding= , jobs are being eliminated, new jobs are appearing that allow telecommutin= g and flexible time, stocks are tumbling, real estate is stagnant and we= =92re in the middle of a horrible drought.

For each of these changes we can decide if it=92s good or bad. Change does= n=92t always bring growth, but growth can never occur without change.

The old 48 Days Radio Show is history =96 the new 48 Da= ys Online Radio Show is starting Tuesday, August 7th. Details belo= w.

Does anybody out there feel like you=92re stuck in second gear? Maximum re= vs but not gaining speed? Maybe it=92s time to shove in the clutch, take a= fresh look, and shift to another gear.

= 1. Persistence -- Those #$%@ Squirrels=20 <= /TD>
= Squirrels =96 10, Dan =96 0. Joanne and I have always enjoy= ed the beautiful variety of birds in middle Tennessee. We love to put out = new bird feeders and then enjoy the stunning colors of cardinals, finches, = wrens, orioles, woodpeckers, and many more. With woods all around us, I= =92m not surprised to see squirrels attracted to the feeders as well. We d= o feed them in various places and enjoy their presence; however, they disco= urage the birds from the fanciest feeders and are also quite destructive in= their aggressive search for food.

A couple weeks ago I mentioned my ongoing fascination with our squirrels an= d I received a whole lot of creative ideas. Well, over the years here I= =92ve made many attempts to outsmart these little creatures. I don=92t min= d if they share the area, just stay away from my bird feeders. But the end= result is always the same.

Knowing my superior intelligence, I initially decided that I would block th= em from one large hanging feeder. I purchased a =93squirrel baffle=94 from= the local bird shop. Upon attaching this to the pole, I stepped back, con= fident I had solved this small problem. About 30 minutes later, we noticed= the squirrels eating contentedly from the same feeder. And thus began my = long battle to outwit these little tiny brained rodents. I greased the pol= e =96 they climbed up and slid down repeatedly. I saw them jump to the top= of the =93baffle=94 and then across to the feeders. I raised both the baf= fle and the feeders to a new height. Joanne saw them crawl up the tree and= jump about 20 feet down to the top of the feeder. I moved the entire feed= er out of reach of the trees. The next morning they were sitting in their = usual places on my feeder. I took the feeder out of the ground, took it to= my barn and straightened the extended arms to raise the feeders to an unre= achable height. I increased the amount of food in the boxes specifically designated for them = to no avail.=20=20

At each stage I would step back, basking in my unquestioned ability to outw= it these little hairy rats. I contemplated explosions, machine guns and be= ar traps. I began to visualize an Adam Sandler movie with barricades, mili= tia men and stealth bombers. I=92ve tried electric shock feeders, spring l= oaded feeders that close the door with the weight of a squirrel, and I=92ve= mixed red pepper in the food.

As I sit here this morning, I can see out my window three furry little squi= rrels, one on each hanging feeder. My anger has nearly been replaced with = admiration. The feeders are fully 50=94 off the ground. I don=92t know ho= w they are getting up there. But if I could find three people with the per= sistence of these little guys, I=92m convinced we could change the world. = I=92d like to introduce the new 48 Days Seminar to 7000 churches, universit= ies and prisons all across the country. I=92d like to have my next book (<= b>No More Mondays) outsell Harry Potter. Find me three people = with the ingenuity and persistence of these squirrels and we=92ll do all th= at by noon tomorrow.

How many times I have heard people say, =91That can never be done.=94 = =93I had a business and it failed. I=92ll never do that again.=94 =93I tr= ied network marketing and it didn=92t work.=94 =93I=92m just looking for s= ecurity.=94 =93Leaving my job would be too risky.=94 =93Somebody moved my= cheese.=94

What could we accomplish if we had the persistence of these squirrels? So = you slid down the greased pole of a layoff =96 find another way to get back= up. You jumped to a business of your own and failed =96 go after it again= . You never got that college degree =96 what=92s really stopping you now? = What could we accomplish if we were too =93stupid=94 to let failure stop u= s from finding another way?

Maybe our big =93intelligence=94 is a handicap. I=92m sure it=92s stopped = me on the path to success more than once. These squirrels don=92t seem to = know any better =96 they=92re too dumb to know it can=92t be done. They ju= st keep finding new ways to accomplish their goal.

= 2. 48 Days Online Radio=20 <= /TD>
= This week (Tuesday, 7:00 PM CDT) starts the new 48 Days Onli= ne Radio Show. The stats for our radio show on SuperTalk 99.7 WTN here in = Nashville stood out like a silo on the horizon. We were clearly the top ra= ted show for the weekend.

You know the old adage =96 =93The good is the enemy of the best.=94 How do= you walk away from something that is working very well? Only by having a= clear idea of what you=92re moving TO. We are moving to new= er and more powerful technology. While only a limited number of people in = middle Tennessee could listen to the previous live show, now anyone anywher= e in the world can be a participant instantly.

Tim Knox and I will continue to address current issues in work and business= . You can continue to submit questions either in advance or during the sho= w.

You=92ll find the details right here for the 48 Days Radio Sh= ow.

And here are the options for hearing the latest tips for finding fulfilling= work or running your own business:
1. You can dial in and listen live on your phone to the 48 D= ays Radio Show.
2. You can listen live on the Internet for absolutely no cost at all.
3. You can come back anytime during the week =96 or a month from now and c= hoose shows that are of interest to you at the 48 Days Podcast.

Incidentally, I expected a fair amount of complaints from listeners about l= eaving the current Sunday night radio format. Surprisingly, the response w= as 100% in favor of this move. Thanks so much for your many encouraging co= mments. Just one more confirmation that our 48 Days readers are on the cut= ting edge -- seeking new opportunities and options themselves.

Join us Tuesday night, August 7th at 7:00 PM CDT for the inaugural show on = this expanded format.

= 3. Noon-Day Demon=20 <= /TD>
= Medieval writers used this term =96 =93Noon-Day Demon.=94 T= hey were referring to that season in life when we lose our enthusiasm, when= we begin to question our existence and direction. We may call it a mid-li= fe crisis today but the meaning is the same. We hear about switching from = success to significance, or finding our purpose, calling or mission.

Whatever your terminology, see this as a positive opportunity, not as a cri= sis. Yes, it is healthy to take a fresh look at where we are, where we wan= t to go and how we are going to get there. You may not trust the career de= cisions that were made by a 20 yr. old. Look today at your unique (1) Skil= ls and Abilities, (2) Personality Traits, and (3) Values, Dreams and Passio= ns. What have these prepared you for? Zig Ziglar says we should not have = an =93alarm clock=94 but an =93opportunity clock.=94 See the inevitable tr= ansitions in your own life not as crises, but as opportunities to move forw= ard with more focus and confidence.

Take the sting out of the Noon-Day Demon. There is a natural progression f= rom asking =93How can I meet my needs?=94 to =93How can I make a difference= ?=94 Welcome the transition and you will see your enthusiasm, confidence, = and boldness soar.
