= Dear = Kevin,

The squirrels are busy outside my window this morning as I am writing. I a= m annoyed by their disruption of the birds feeding but I have to admire the= ir incredible persistence. No matter what I do to prevent them from gettin= g the sunflower seeds they find a way to win. My annoyance is superseded o= nly by my admiration for their ingenuity. Watching them gives me new ideas= for approaching tasks that seem to be impossible.

The 48 Days radio show and podcast continue to be a great avenue for addres= sing current issues. This week Tim and I talked about all the late-night i= nfomercials that are clamoring for our attention. They seem to promise qui= ck and easy results. If you send in $29 and make $1 million by Friday, ple= ase let me know. We=92ll pass the word along.

You can call on the live broadcast of 48 Days to the Work You Love. The number is (615.737.9986) (Toll Free 877.48DAYS2) each Sunday ni= ght from 6:00-9:00 PM CDT. The call letters are 99.7 FM in Tennessee or go= to Super Talk 99.7 WTN for direct Internet access. You ca= n also listen to any past shows via podcast. 48 Days to the Work You Love

= 1. But I'm Making Good Money=20 <= /TD>
= As we begin the last quarter of the year I always like to ta= ke a fresh look at everything I=92m doing. Are writing, speaking, being on= radio, creating new products, coaching, connecting people and spending tim= e with family and friends all activities that embrace my =93calling,=94 my = purpose for being here on earth? Or have I allowed some things to creep in= that are nothing more than income generators, or just worthless habits tha= t I need to stop doing.

My goal is to determine by November 15th what 15% of my current activities = that I=92m going to stop. I=92ve been doing this for years and have found = it to be a extremely helpful process. By eliminating 15% I then open the d= oor to bring in a new 15%. And it=92s in that new window that I was able t= o begin writing, starting the 48 Days Coaching Connection, enjoying unique excursions with= Joanne, attending enlightening seminars and spending time at a monastery. =

What about you? Are all of your activities connected to your divine purpos= e? Are your work and your lifestyle a reflection of your values =96 = or have you been so busy making a living that you=92ve forgotten to have a = life? Are you cut off from your calling and your heart in a futile= attempt to be =93practical=94 and =93responsible?=94

Several years ago I spoke with a young man who was running ads in Sunday pa= pers, =93offering=94 jobs with the government. He promotes highly paid pos= itions and says jobs are waiting. Then when calls come in, the callers are= high pressured into buying a course to help them prepare for the civil ser= vice exam. No jobs, no openings =96 just an emotional hook to get desperat= e people on the phone =96 and then manipulate them into spending money to p= repare for an exam they could probably take today. This guy feels pretty b= ad about what he=92s doing =96 and only plans to do it for a couple more ye= ars. He=92s making $4,000 =96 $6,000 a week and figures he=92ll be able to= do some worthwhile things with all the money he=92s making. I know anothe= r gentleman who publicly announced in church that he was going to do a reve= rse tithe. He was going to live on 10% of his income and give 90% to the ch= urch. He promoted miracle medical cures, a credit repair system, and a pro= duct that addressed a loophole in the law =96 ran national TV ads and brought in money by the truckload. His= promotions promised things that really weren=92t quite true =96 but he pro= udly gave enormous sums of money to his church for worthwhile ministries. = Then to the horror of his family and friends he spent a couple of years in = prison for mail fraud. Not exactly the kind of legacy most of us want to leave.

What do you need to stop doing =96 to once again find what Thomas Merton de= scribed as that =93hidden wholeness?=94 What should you be planning for in= 2008 that will finally release your true brilliance? Are there adjustment= s needed in your work, your relationships, and your thinking? It takes cou= rage to break free from habits, traditions and unhealthy expectations. It = takes courage to live out our calling, to unleash our creativity and unique= genius. It takes courage to turn away from the pack and launch out in a n= ew, inspired direction. But then your heart can sing, you can look people = directly in the eyes and be confident of the value of your work.

If someone has to lose for you to win, you=92re in the wrong business.

= 2. Your Application Scares Us=20 <= /TD>
= I=92ve seen every shape, color and creative package of resum= es and job applications possible =96 but never one that actually scared me.=

Last Friday, emergency crews at Eastern Illinois University evacuated a bui= lding after a campus postal carrier discovered a suspicious looking package= addressed to the college admissions office.

"There was no return address, it was poorly written, poorly addressed to th= e university, there were misspellings," school spokeswoman Vicki Woodard sa= id Saturday. "There was some tape over it. Just the overall appearance was = rather strange."

The unusual size, no return address, misspellings in the address and the ta= pe holding torn sections together were enough to bring in the local bomb sq= uad. Explosives investigators X-rayed the package and blocked off nearby s= treets =96 only to discover the envelope contained only an application for = admission to the school.

How would you evaluate that application? Would you think that young studen= t would be a great addition to your university? Would you want that person= working for you =96 representing your company? I am constantly amazed whe= n I see people walking into business establishments in torn cutoffs, with a= baseball cap on, and then asking, =93You don=92t have any jobs, do you?= =94 Or college graduates roaming the aisles at career fairs in flip flops = and coffee-stained t-shirts, handing out resumes in anticipation of that fi= rst $80,000 a year job. These are the same people you=92ll hear complainin= g about the bad economy and the fact that no one is hiring.

Funny how a clean shirt and pair of slacks, an enthusiastic smile and direc= t eye contact can change the economy instantly.

= 3. Sometimes Business Is Like Fishing In An Empty Pond=20 <= /TD>
= Here=92s another great article by my radio co-host, Tim Knox= . Here Tim describes an early fishing trip with his dad =96 where he learn= ed an important business principle: Don=92t fish in an empty pond.

Tim lays out how having a great product with no interested customers will l= ead to nothing but frustration. Don=92t waste your time =96 find what your= customers want.
