= 1. The Big Lie=85=85=85=20 <= /TD>
= I read a new book this week (Becoming a Coaching Leader. One of the issues the au= thor covers is what he calls The Big Lie. Here=92s the essence =96 we tend= to tell ourselves things like:

  • =93I=92m going to work really hard just until I =91make=92 it, then I= =92ll slow down and spend time with my family.=94

  • =93As soon as I get my degree, then I=92ll work on the spiritual and pe= rsonal areas of my life.=94

  • =93As soon as the children are out of school, then I=92ll focus on maki= ng my marriage better.=94

  • =93When I retire I=92ll figure out what I really enjoy and spend time d= oing that.=94

  • =93As soon as I find the time I=92m going to create a Life Plan.=94

Well, you know what happens =96 Life Happens! The days, weeks and years ru= sh by and many people get trapped in their own version of the movie Groundh= og Day. Every day repeats what happened the day before but the dreamed of = goals and higher levels of success never come. I see people every week who= are asking, =93How did I end up here?=94

Unless you create a clear plan of action, nothing will change. In fact, le= ft to themselves, things will deteriorate.

"If you don=92t set goals for yourself, you are doomed to work to ach= ieve the goals of someone else." ~ Brian Tracy

= 2. The 5 Day Weekend=20 <= /TD>
=
= Yes, there really is a movement to enact a five day weekend = =96 yes that means a two-day workweek. The founders of this movement say w= e have moved away from the Declaration of Independence=92s most famous line= : =93Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness=94 with the trend to work = more days and longer hours.

You have to realize that our current calendar is a relatively new thing. I= n 10,000 BC the work week consisted of every day of your life. There was n= o calendar so there was no recognition of a weekend. In 1833 England appro= ved an 8-hr work day! Oh wait, that was only for children ages 9 to 13. E= veryone else still worked 12 hours a day, six days a week. But they were e= ncouraged to take one day off. In 1929 Stalin created a new Soviet calenda= r. The good news was you only needed to work four days. The bad news was= the week was only five days long. He abolished the weekend =96 so everyon= e=92s schedule was different. When I grew up on the farm we used the Bibli= cal mandate to labor six days and rest one.

Now it=92s 2007. This idea was started as a gimmick by the Asheville Conve= ntion and Visitors Bureau, which is spending more than $600,000 on the camp= aign. It was intended to get more people to spend their vacations in Ashev= ille, but the idea has mushroomed into a full-blown movement, with its own = website, rallies and a petition that already has a couple thousand signatur= es. Joanne and I happened to be in Asheville, NC for a speaking engagement= when we saw this kick-off rally taking place. I didn=92t see many I=92d l= ike to hire =96 I think this crowd of about 100 was destined to not work.
If you want to join the movement, you can sign the petition and get your T-= shirt here.

= 3. You don=92t have to pay me more, but=85=85=85=85=20 <= /TD>
= Here=92s another great article by my radio co-host, Tim Knox= . Here Tim describes the latest research on how to keep your best employee= s. Gone are the days when the weekly paycheck and two weeks vacation were = enough to keep top talent.

What would keep you at a job? What could you offer your employees in addit= ion to fair pay? You may be surprised at the simple things that will keep = great people on your team.

= =93Everybody has their own private Mount Everest they wer= e put on this earth to climb. You may never reach the summit; for that you= will be forgiven. = Postage Rate Increase =96 Again
Only the government could indiscriminately keep raising the cost of a simpl= e service like delivering the mail. As private enterprise has gotten invol= ved in telephone service, electricity, and prison care, we=92ve seen the co= st decrease =96 at times dramatically. However, the U.S. government contin= ues to escalate spending and charges to the consumers. On May 14, you=92ll= start paying more to mail a first class letter. The new rate is 41 cents. = But, as a little concession, they are offering a new =93forever=94 stamp. T= he forever stamp went on sale April 12 and costs 41 cents. However it will = always be valid for mailing a letter, no matter how much postage rates rise= in the future. There=92s no limit on the number of forever stamps you can = buy. But the stamps won=92t be available in the big rolls most often used b= y businesses. So clear a desk drawer for lots of sheets of forever stamps.<= br>
The Real IRS
The IRS is reminding taxpayers that the address of the official IRS governm= ent Web site is www.irs.gov. Don=92t fall for irs.com, irs.net, irs.biz or = even irs.org.
