Are you fishing or hoping for a free boat ride?

This morning Joanne and I were talking to some locals on a tiny island where we’re hanging out for a few days.  We saw a fishing boat come in right after a pretty violent storm.  There were probably 20 guys hanging around the edges of this very small boat.  No one is paid for their services – they all fish and keep track of their catch.  Typically, they pay the captain and owner of the boat 2 pounds of fish per day for the privilege of fishing from his boat.  When they get back into the city they sell what they have to the local market at $5-6.00 per pound.  Let’s say they’ve been out for 3 days.  The boat owner gets 20 times 6 pounds for a total of 120 pounds.  At $5.00 per pound his share equals $600.  You can see the incentive for piling more guys into his little boat – and with no OSHA requirements – well, you get the picture.

In all things – charity

“In essentials unity, in non-essentials liberty, in all things charity.”

Often attributed to St Augustine, popularized by Richard Baxter in 1679 and frequently quoted by John Wesley

I think this could be helpful as a model for marriages, families, churches, communities, and nations.

Is Wolf Blitzer Hurting America?

This is a guest post by Darren Hardy, author of ”The Compound Effect—Jumpstart Your Income, Your Life, Your Success.”  Darren is an accomplished entrepreneurpublisher and editorial director of SUCCESS magazine. He’s a peak performance expert and popular keynote speaker.  I regularly tell attendees at our live events that if you had to choose one resource for your success, I would tell you to get SUCCESS magazine.  I asked Darren if I could run this entire post – I think it’ s a message we need to hear.  If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guidelines here.

During the media tour launching The Compound Effect, CNN asked me to submit an article for their website. So, what do I have to say to CNN? Below is the article I submitted to my PR team. Even after they begged me to neuter it, to refocus it on 24/7 news (not just CNN and not just the Wolf man), CNN still didn’t have the backbone to publish the critical commentary. So I publish it here.

Winners Never Quit – Baloney!

We’ve all heard the old adage, “Winners never quit, quitters never win.”  Is that really true?  Does that mean that if you’re driving from Detroit to Miami and you suddenly realize you’re actually headed for Savannah you would simply continue on?  Or even speed up?  Or just “try harder?” Of course not – you would immediately correct your direction, even if it meant going back to Atlanta to get back on the right road.

Why is it that in jobs or businesses people often believe that if they just persist, somehow things will get better?  And that they need to be loyal and never show signs of “giving up?”

Here’s a question from Susan:
“I would like to know what to do when you are working so hard and everything seems to continue to fail. Do you change plans or what?”

Money comes in a package

“Work must provide the opportunity for spiritual and personal growth as well as financial success.  The irony is that if it does not provide all three, there will be a natural pressure to keep the financial rewards low.  The search for money alone will always be self-defeating.”    Dan Miller
