Don’t play it safe

“20 years from now you will be disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the one’s you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover” ~ Mark Twain

Amish and thriving

Every time we visit family and friends in Holmes County Ohio,  I find myself fascinated by the quantity of businesses operating in that strong Amish area. We watch 18-wheelers turn down tiny gravel roads to get to the various businesses tucked among the back roads. The diminishing number of people directly involved in agriculture has affected even this agrarian group. Reports indicate that in this community, more than half the Amish have left the farms to work in small businesses. According to commerce information, there are about 1,000 Amish microenterprises in this area. Many of these boast annual sales of more than $500,000. Yes, employees are making buggies, harnesses and lumber, but also furniture, modern cabinets, garage doors and cheese. Restaurants, hotels, fitness centers and tourists sites are flourishing.

Has Someone Stolen Your Dream?

The scream from the other room came right before the sun came up. It was my three year old daughter.

As I ran in to the room expecting to see her sprawled on the floor writhing in pain she looked up at me and said, “Someone stole my dream!”

Now as tragic as you might imagine that is for a three year old it caused me to think about how this happens to us as adults.

The “adjacent possibility”

A few years ago biologist and researcher Stuart Kauffman came up with a term he called “the adjacent possible.”  It’s a complex theory but here’s a simple way to look at it.  Think of being in a house that magically expands with every door you open.  You walk into a room and see three more doors leading out.  Once you open one of those doors you enter another room with another three doors leading to yet new rooms.  Keep opening doors and eventually you’ll realize you’re in an expanding palace.

Can I see your resume? I’m making paper airplanes

Yes, it’s almost that bad.  A resume just doesn’t have the value it once had.  Starbucks attracted 7.6 million job applicants over the past 12 months.  Procter & Gamble got over a million applications last year for the 2,000 new positions they had.  Google hired 7,000 people in 2011 – after receiving over two million resumes.  Many companies don’t want your resume.  Because of legal issues they are required to keep your application for two years even if they never interviewed you.  How do you store two million resumes?

You know what companies do want to see – your online presence.  What will someone see if they do a Google search for you?  If there’s nothing there, you are non-existent in today’s workplace.

Only 19% of hiring managers at small companies say they look at the resumes they receive.
