Should I stay or should I go?

Would your advice to Doug be different than mine?

“Dan, I’ve been working as an IT network administrator for the past 17 years which I greatly dislike.  I currently make a little more than $40K on a salary.  I have lost all passion at my job and dread going to work every Monday morning.  A few years ago I had a taste of self-employment when I was not employed full-time and greatly desire that freedom to work at home again.  I currently have a part-time business and make close to the income I make on my job.

When is the right time to quit a job? Should I just keep working my job forever and grow my business at the same time and endure the job I don’t enjoy’? Or should I quit my current job and grow my business and increase my income?”

I'm being forced out of my "calling"

Here is an all-too-common question:

Dan, I’ve been with my company (a non-profit ministry) for 10.5 years, and found out yesterday my department is being outsourced. I’ve been offered a position in another department, but at a 22% pay decrease. We can’t afford the pay decrease, but I don’t want to walk away from my calling in ministry.  What do you suggest that I do? Thank you!

I suggest you get another job – pronto.

You’re confusing the terms “calling,” “career” and “job.”

“Calling” is the big picture — it’s what you’re doing in life that makes a difference for you, that builds meaning for you, and that you can look back on in your later years to see the impact you’ve made on the world.   Everyone has a “vocation,” a “calling.”   We fulfill our calling by being excellent at whatever God created us to be.  Everything you do ought to be part of fulfilling your vocation.  Your job will ideally be one part of that, but at times may not be directly related to it.

I’m back with my parents – and stuck!

Dan, I recently lost my teaching job and had to move back home with my parents, not exactly what I had in the plans at 30.  My biggest fear at this point is that I have been living without a sense of purpose for a few years now.  I have a lot of passion and determination, but have no clue what God created me to do.  HELP!!!

I agree that moving back home with your parents at 30 was probably not your dream of success.  We all have times of reevaluation – so this as one of those time.  But the real concern here is your statement that “I have been living without a sense of purpose for a few years now.”  Losing a job is a small detail to be addressed compared to not having a sense of purpose.  It’s impossible to present yourself with enthusiasm and confidence if all you’re trying to do is “get a job.”

Don’t die like this….

“Many people die with their music still in them. Why is this so?  Too often it is because they are always getting ready to live.  Before they know it, time runs out.” Oliver Wendell Holmes (Former U. S. Supreme Court justice)

Have you ever heard someone brag about the wonderful things they are going to do

  • when the kids are grown
  • when they finally get a degree
  • when they get a million dollars
  • when they get a promotion
  • when they retire

Maybe that person is planning to travel more, write more, spend more time with family or get in better health.

Have you also known someone who died before they reached that magic time in the future when “things” would be better?  Of course you have.  I have a friend who recently retired from a job he hated for many years.  Can he now do all those things he’s been dreaming of?  No – his health is so poor from living an unauthentic life that he is essentially confined to his little house.

To Land Your Dream Job, Do This…..

The old days of just sending out a great resume are over.  Thousands of people have a stellar resume – and can’t find a job.  You can bypass them by understanding this is a process of selling.  If you were selling Kubota tractors you would want to get my attention at least three times.  That’s a simple practice of any effective selling.

When looking for a job you will want to:

  • Send a letter of introduction
  • Send your cover letter and resume
  • Connect with a followup phone call

That process, done effectively, is still getting people3-4 job offers in the 48 Day time frame.  Yes, even in this “recession”.  The three-step process is a marketing technique of repetition.  Doing the same with your job search creates “top of mind” positioning for you.  You can bypass people with more degrees and better work experience simply by targeting 30-40 companies and using this process of repetitive presentation.
