Need a better job? Try this……

I’ve been revisiting the old Think and Grow Rich (free pdf attached) in my reading time each morning. Written by Napoleon Hill in 1937, this little book has now sold over 60 million copies.

I’m blown away at how his tips for finding a job in 1937 still work perfectly today.  Here are his exact words from Chapter Seven – The Crystallization of Desire into Action

How to Get the Exact Position You Desire

Everyone enjoys doing the kind of work for which he is best suited.  An artist loves to work with paints, a craftsman with his hands, a writer loves to write.  Those with less definite talents have their preferences for certain fields of business and industry.  If American does anything well, it offers a full range of occupations, tilling the soil, manufacturing, marketing, and the professions.

Just pick up the phone!

Dan, I am hiring a person for our government agency.  I decided to place my name on the ad with my office phone number so applicants could call with questions. I posted the advertisement on March 11 and as of today (March 22) of the 74 applicants, zero have tried to call me to ask about the position.  I am a little shocked that no one has tried to call me about the position. Trey

No One Has Called.  Did you get that? In a competitive hiring environment 74 people still just send out resumes and then hope the phone rings.  How sad!!   It really doesn’t take much to make yourself stand out in a sea of applicants.

In 48 Days to the Work You Love I lay out the simple steps required to get multiple job offers – yes, even in this economy.

Use the three critical steps of the job search:

Don’t Chase That Snake!

Looking back can keep you trapped in defeat – looking forward will release your success

When I was 10 years old, one of my best friends was Bob Queen.  One afternoon while exploring the backacreage of our neighboring farms, a snake bit Bob. Seeing the snake slither off, my immediate response was to run after the snake, track him down and repay the scoundrel for what he had done to my friend.  Bob, however, being a much wiser hunter and outdoorsman, quickly pulled out his knife, lanced the bite, sucked the blood out and spit out the poison.  The focus for him was on his own well being, not on repaying the snake.

Looking for three years??

“Dan — My husband has been looking for a job for at least three years, but he seems to be having trouble getting past the hurdle of not working since 2003. (He was the one to quit and stay at home with our first child, and, for the past few years, he has been trying to return to work.) Recently, he passed 3 of the 4 CPA exams and is going back to school for his Master’s, and those activities seem to be generating some interest. However, nothing gets very far (lots of resumes sent, an interview here or there, but someone else is always hired). He has started calling places a week or two after sending a resume, but that also does not seem to be helping very much.” – Sandy
