Can I do this and make money?

Yes, I know I talk a lot about turning your passion into profits.  A lot of people still question whether passion should be part of the equation when looking for work.  Shouldn’t we just be responsible and find something with a paycheck?  When we released  Wisdom meets Passion I was inundated with inquiries about how people can turn their passion into their income generator.  And you hear me giving examples of artists, sculptors, magicians, comedians and musicians who have done just that.  I have a neighbor who told me how he became a millionaire at age 33 after reading No More … Read More

There’s always another solution

Many years ago in a small Indian village, a farmer had the misfortune of owing a large sum of money to a village moneylender.  The moneylender, who was old and ugly, fancied the farmer’s beautiful daughter. So he proposed a bargain. He said he would forgive the farmer’s debt if he could marry his daughter. Both the farmer and his daughter were horrified by the proposal. So the cunning money-lender suggested that they let providence decide the matter. He told them that he would put a black pebble and a white pebble into an empty money bag. Then the girl … Read More

I just want more money and less work

I just got a FedEx delivery.  This was a new driver, and as I always do, I talked to him about his work – did he love it, did he have any dreams for something else, etc.  I asked if he was an employee or an independent contractor as I know FedEx has both. Just the normal conversation I have with everyone I meet!! He said his boss has 15 trucks and is an independent contractor.  The young driver said that keeps them from unionizing – a fact that he dislikes.  He’d like to be in a union so they could … Read More

But I had no choice

You’ve heard the story about a man riding a horse at breakneck speed.  It appears he’s going someplace very important.  A man standing along the roadside shouts, “Where are you going?”  To which the rider yells back, “I don’t know.   Ask the horse.” This seems to be essentially the story I’m hearing from lots of people today.  They’re riding the horse of circumstances, their habits or other people’s expectations.  If that describes you, it’s time to grab the reins and move your life in the direction you really want to go. I’m currently working with a very prominent lady – … Read More

Boomerang Kids

Yes, that’s really the term for kids that go off to college or the great job – only to return to the safety net of Mom and Dad at some point.  I recently had a May graduate describe this issue: “I live at home with my parents which isn’t exactly conducive to building a social life. The rent’s hard to beat, the food is great and we even have this great laundry service where you put your clothes on the floor and this magical fairy washes and presses them, but I’m a little restless and frustrated, especially since I haven’t found … Read More

Congratulations – you’re fired

“The company where I’ve worked for 30 years will be closing in March 2017. If I stay until the end I will receive a 6-month severance. How can I effectively use the next six months to position myself for a new career, and collect the severance – or is this the right approach? Thanks!”  Jeff Congratulations on getting a 6-month advance notice and then a 6-month severance.  For a company that’s closing, you are being given a very generous exit plan.  Yes, I absolutely recommend you stay where you are and collect the severance.  Think about it – for the next six months … Read More

Please beat me

I once had the opportunity to meet (Apple) Dan Miller, an Amish neighbor of my Dad.  He told me that years ago Dad had complained to him that his apple trees looked beautiful but weren’t producing any apples.  Known far and wide for his apples, (Apple) Dan told my Dad to go home, grab a hammer and give his trees a severe beating around the trunk.  He said they needed to have something wake them up – that life had been too easy and they needed a challenge to come alive.  While this seemed counter to the careful fertilizing, watering and … Read More

Want to be David or Goliath – you get to choose!

As you recall from your Bible history, Goliath was an experienced soldier.  He had all the latest equipment – shield, body armor, sword, and helmet.  Not only was he a big, big guy, but he thought all his fancy equipment would protect him.  David, on the other hand, had none of the fancy stuff.  He had a strong faith in God, a lot of personal confidence, an exercised and toned body and the ability to move and act quickly. In the history of the species, protective armor has almost always spelled disaster.  Animals with a shell are slow, finding it … Read More

Want to hear about my comfortable misery?

I frequently draw from the wisdom of the Peanuts comic strip.  In one episode, Lucy announces, “Boy, do I feel crabby!” Her little brother Linus, is quick to try to rescue his sister.  “Maybe I can be of help. Why don’t you just take my place here in front of the TV while I go and fix you a nice snack?  Sometimes we all need a little pampering to help us feel better.”  Then Linus brings her a sandwich, a few chocolate chip cookies, and some milk. “Now is there anything else I can get you?” he asks.  “Is there … Read More

Not till God tells me………

“Dan! I’m feeling like I’m in a dead-end situation, but I’m not going to move until God tells me to do so!” I received this note recently from a reader – and it represents thousands of similar notes I’ve received over the last 20 years. The writer continues, “Dan, I’m miserable, frustrated, anxious, sick, exhausted, bored, nervous, worried, concerned, restless, fearful, frightened, apprehensive, troubled, upset, angry, exasperated, incensed, infuriated, discouraged, aggravated, maddened, offended, disappointed, distressed, anguished, tormented, suffering, afflicted, suffering, persecuted” – well, you get the idea.  But he’s not going to move until God himself “tells” him to. Just … Read More
