How to Invest 30 Minutes to Gain 4 Hours Every Day

Are you sitting down?

If you’re like most computer-based entrepreneurs, you have probably been sitting in a chair for most of the day. Even if you work a “day job” and burn the midnight oil working on a side business, chances are you spend the vast majority of your day being sedentary, often in front of a monitor.

We’ve all heard the health benefits of being active since we were in elementary school. And we would certainly like
to slim down and tone up to look better.

Yet, many of us still struggle to make exercise a regular part of our already-busy routine.

Well, have you considered what getting fit can do for your business?

Use Fitness to Fuel Your Business Pursuits

“How do you become more productive?”

Sir Richard Branson leaned back and thought for a moment before answering.

“Work out.”

He went on to elaborate that working out gave him at least four additional hours of productive time every day.

There is a reason that one of the busiest and most successful entrepreneurs in the world cites exercise as his top productivity secret. And you don’t have to look that far up the business success scale to see the impact of a fit lifestyle.

A regular exercise routine is common among most top performers that we admire for their productivity. From Fortune 500 CEOs to Barack Obama, successful business people typically make fitness an integral part of their busy daily schedule.

4 Keys to Exercise that Will Boost Your Productivity

You may have noticed that the title of this post promised you could reap the rewards of productivity in just 30 minutes a day. Well, I lied.

You can do it in less than 30 minutes.

If you want to get a great business productivity boost (and shape up your body in the process), here are four keys to making it happen by investing just 15-25 minutes per day.

1. Work Out at Home

If you are tight on time and/or money, or even if you just don’t like the health club environment, you should definitely consider working out at home. When you skip the gym, you save a lot of travel and preparation time, not to mention an average of $43 per month in gym membership fees.

You can definitely achieve your fitness goals in your home with little or no equipment.  And there are a variety of high-quality at-home fitness programs to show you the way.

2. Do It First

If there’s one practical key to making exercise work as part of a busy schedule, it’s doing it early in the day. When you get your workout done before all of the distractions and mini-emergencies of the day unfold, you are much more likely to stick with your routine.

You’ll likely find that you can focus better and get a workout completed with maximum efficiency when you do it first. Plus, starting the morning off with a quick workout really sets you up for an energetic and productive business day.

3. Full HIIT Action

For a real metabolism boost, you should stick to full-body workouts mixed in with High Intensity Interval Training and your favorite cardio. By employing HIIT routines, you can completely work your body in as little as 12 minutes.

In fact, if you can continue a HIIT workout longer than 20 minutes, you simply aren’t being intense enough in your effort!

4. Integrate Family Time

We tend to segment our lives to the point where all of our time is compartmentalized with no overlap, which can lead us to feel stretched too thin and unfulfilled.

At Fit Marriage, we love to hear from couples who work out together and make fitness an integral part of their quality time together.  However, it’s not always possible to exercise together, and some couples just don’t enjoy it – but you can still support each other and find opportunities to get your kids into the mix.

Get Started Today!

If you’re like most business builders, you are stretched for time, a little short on energy and you probably have a few pounds to shed. By being proactive and making the right kind of exercise an integral part of your routine, you will be amazed at how much more you can get done while you feel great in the process.

Now is the time to get out of your computer chair and start getting active.  The best way to get started is to sign up for our free fitness newsletter at Fit Marriage.  We are here to help you use fitness as a powerful fuel for your busy life.

Get moving today – your waistline and your business’s bottom line will thank you!

Thanks for this awesome post Dustin. I have made a goal of losing 130 pounds his year. Two years ago I lost 132 pounds and gained it back and more over the last year. Now I see where I went wrong and am woroking to have a healthier lifestyle and not just lose weight. This post has so much great info, it’s a big help!

Yes Kimanzi, I’ve lost hundreds of pounds in the last few years, but they’ve been the same pounds I took off.  I’d loose the weight then take break from my good habits.  I’ve also identified that I tend to eat when I’m under financial stress, so I need to address this.  Much luck and hard work and success to you!

This makes me think of a few CEO friends who have told me they are “too busy” to work out.  That seems to be an acceptable excuse.  At the same time, from personal experience, I have learned that you cannot work off a bad diet.  Proper eating must come first, because that 600 calorie piece of chocolate cake is going to cost me 1 hour of my time on an elliptical trainer.  Then I still need 30 minutes to get ahead.

I slipped with a piece of cake yesterday but it won’t happen today.  Thanks for the motivation!

Totally, Sutton!  I had to keep this post focused on movement/exercise with limited space, but you are right – 80% of our physical results come from our diet.  Somedays I wish that wasn’t the case, but you can’t escape it!

      Thanks for sharing,

This is so true!  I find I’m most focused and most productive when I’ve completed my power yoga routine for the day.  The only thing is I’ve found I’m alot tighter (less limber) in the mornings so I usually wait until lunch.  Do you have a suggestion for how to start the day with yoga and not feel so tight?  I do agree that it’s better to begin the day with exercise and would love to do that.

Thanks for sharing, Fawn!  I am with you on the issue of having stiff muscles and joints in the morning.  If I’m doing something really low-impact, I just ease into it.  However, if I’m going to be doing HIIT training, strength work or heavy stretching (like your Yoga), I always start with a gradual warm-up.  This could mean getting out for a quick walk, or simply running in place for a few minutes followed by some jumping jacks.

For the BEST limbering up, I recommend taking a hot shower.  This can be tough (and a bit wasteful) if you also need to shower after your workout, but nothing beats it for getting your muscles really warmed-up on a cold morning.

      All my best,

      Dustin

This would be a big hurtle for me….. I have some real big hang ups as far as exercise goes but  I know it would be a really good thing to do……  your post really makes me think…. I’m not way overweight. If I  lose just about 20 lbs and I’d be in really good shape…..I just have to be very careful as I have back issues….I like productive exercise like shoveling snow and gardening, chopping wood…..but I have to be so careful…

    • http://www.fitmarriage.com/ Dustin

      Vickie,

While I didn’t have the space to cover it in this post, please keep in mind that fully 80% of your physical health is derived from your DIET.  So, even if you have physical limitations on the exercise front, you can certainly work on improving the habits you have around food to shed those last 20 pounds.

I bet that would also help your back issues to some degree, and perhaps allow you to build up to those productive exercises you really enjoy!

      Keep in touch!

      Dustin
