Stop cheapening my profession

Here’s a note I received from a 48 Days member a few days ago.

“Dan, I recently reviewed the – 48 Low-Cost Business Ideas and the section 45 – Photography. With all due respect, we would appreciate the removal of this topic for suggested business startups. It is a misconception that photography is easy and that $400 puts you solidly in the game. I have been a professional photographer for over 25 years, it is not easy and $400 is not sufficient to put anyone in the game. These suggestions, along with the invention of digital photography have created more unskilled and untalented people taking business away from those in the industry with the experience, by low balling prices and giving everything away.”  Read more »

Want to make $1.75 a year – just write a book…………..

I love writing in all its forms: blogs, articles, books, etc.  However, the statistics for choosing this as a career are
dismal.  One in four Americans does not read one book per year.  Over 1,000,000 new books were published last year.  Average book sales for a Christian book put out by a major publisher are about 4,000 copies.  AuthorSolutions reports that sales of their self-published titles average about 150 copies each.  The average sales overall for a book published in America is about 500.  Read more »

No I’m not encouraging you to go back to the farm – believe me, I was looking for other things to do every time I was milking a cow or throwing hay bales in the summer heat.   But Old MacDonald gives us a clue for how to write, speak or work – so it engages the people around us and makes them want to pay us.

Here’s the clue – EIEIO.  Remember that?  Now in the song it was just a rhyming filler.  But as a success tool, it looks like this:

Speaking for free – but being paid well

I just returned from Kent Julian’s Speak It Forward Boot Camp in Duluth, GA.  Beginning speakers are always concerned about getting a speaking fee from organizations that may be small or non-profit.  Did you ever hear about the guy who couldn’t see the forest for the trees?

Last year I met with a local weatherman here in Nashville.  He loves educating people – but is confronted with the fact that most people are not going to pay to come hear about the weather.  I suggested that he was looking in the wrong place for the income potential.  Rather than expecting attendees to “pay” to come to a presentation, why didn’t he get sponsorships from organizations that wanted to gain credibility with the same audience?  Read more »
