Dr. Oz – have all 3 of these or you'll be sick

This morning I was listening to the current Success Magazine audio CD.
Darren Hardy interviewed Dr. Mehmet Oz (on the front cover of Success this month).  Darren asked him what it required to be healthy.

Dr. Oz says there are only three components:

  1. Exercise – elevated heart rate for 30 minutes 3-4 times a week
  2. Eat Right
  3. Have a purpose for living

Whoa – here’s a world class heart surgeon who says one of the top priorities for living well is to have a purpose for living.  Do you know yours?

Sometimes I talk to people who have been struggling for years to “discover their purpose.”  I think we often make that some big, supernatural, Mt. Sinai kind of experience and ignore what’s right in front of us.  Knowing your purpose doesn’t have to mean you will be the next Mother Teresa or Billy Graham.  It may mean that you are a faithful school teacher, neighbor, cookie maker or Wal-Mart greeter.

Here’s an uncomplicated process for knowing your purpose:

What is the thing that I do that convinces me I’m making a difference?

Knowing your purpose doesn’t have to be big or original – it just has to be “you.”  Exercising and eating right may seem more tangible but you can know your purpose and be acting in that area today.  Do all three and expect your own unique success to show up immediately.

I’d also add sleep to this list. We’re a sleep deprived nation and it’s making us sick and less productive.

Justin – yep, people would be surprised if they knew how much I sleep.  What a great component of a healthy life.

I agree rest and sleep should be on the list. I know that I when I get good rest and sleep I feel more energized and productive for the day ahead. I need some rest and sleep as I type this.

Yeah… I consistently get less than 7 hours of sleep a night. AND IT IS WEARING ON ME SOMETHING FIERCE! Come October 8th though and I’ll be a LOT more in control of my schedule. Yet another benefit!

I think the hardest part of finding work you love for most people is discovering what that work is. Like Dan always says “find a job you love and you’ll never work a day in your life”, so true.

What if you never get any feedback from anyone that you are making a difference?

I’d like to think I am, but that doesn’t mean that I truly am. There are some things that make me come alive, that I enjoy doing, but I don’t know that those things translate into impacting others.
