Get off the nail – today!!

This is one of the most commented-on stories in The Rudder of the Day.

I heard a story from my friend Bob about an old dog lying on the front porch.  A neighbor approached the porch and could hear the dog softly moaning.  He asked his friend why the dog was whimpering.  And the owner said:  “He’s lying on a nail.” Predictably the man said, “Well, why doesn’t he move?” To which the owner replied, “I guess it doesn’t hurt quite that much yet.”

I’m sick of seeing the rich get richer

Play

1. I just lost a job I’ve hated for 3.5 of 4.5 years, but didn’t want to quit until I had another job. What should I do? HELP!

2. I’m sick of hearing and seeing the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

3. I want to get into funeral photography but I have no clue where I should start or what to do to get this idea off the ground.

4. How do I apply the Job Search process laid out in “48 Days . . .” to an INTERNAL job search?

Einstein's 3 Rules of Work….

Albert Einstein once described his three rules of work:

  1. Out of clutter find simplicity
  2. From discord find harmony
  3. In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.

As I walked into my office this morning I was confronted with an accumulation of my work projects – book manuscripts, manifestos, blog notes, partially read books, new magazines, speaking notes and emails to be answered.  I quickly made one neat stack of books on my desk and closed out all programs on my computer except where I write my blogs.  I must create simplicity out of clutter to accomplish anything.

To Land Your Dream Job, Do This…..

The old days of just sending out a great resume are over.  Thousands of people have a stellar resume – and can’t find a job.  You can bypass them by understanding this is a process of selling.  If you were selling Kubota tractors you would want to get my attention at least three times.  That’s a simple practice of any effective selling.

When looking for a job you will want to:

  • Send a letter of introduction
  • Send your cover letter and resume
  • Connect with a followup phone call

Does “Education” expand or limit your options?

Of course we assume that any degree expands our possibilities.  Someone with an M.D. behind their name certainly has far more options than someone without a graduate degree or even a B.A.  A person with any college degree has more opportunity than a person who has never invested the time, energy and money to get that valuable piece of paper.  Or do they?
