You Keep Your F — I’m Keeping My Dream!

Here’s an excerpt from No More Dreaded Mondays

When Monty Roberts was in high school, his teacher asked the class to write about what they wanted to do when they grew up. Monty wrote that he wanted to own a ranch and raise thoroughbred racehorses. His teacher gave him an F and explained that the dream was unrealistic for a boy living in a camper in the back of a pickup truck. He would never be able to make this a reality. When the teacher offered the chance to rewrite his paper for a higher grade, Monty told him, “You keep your F; I’m keeping my dream.”

Today, Monty’s 154-acre ranch in Solvang, California, is home to world-class thoroughbred racehorses, and his gentle Join-Up method of training horses (and kids) is the inspiration of companies around the world. Join-Up is a method of training horses without the use of pain or force. Monty studied the nonverbal communication between horses and gives a horse the option of accepting the leadership of a human, thus “joining up” rather than being forced into submission.  He and his wife, Pat, have raised their own three children as well as forty-seven foster children, who return regularly to spend time on the ranch. This real-life horse whisperer inspired the book of that title and the Robert Redford movie that propelled Monty to fame and fortune beyond his wildest boyhood dreams.

So, who’s been trying to talk you out of your dream? Who’s been telling you you’re crazy and it can’t be done? What level of success is that person experiencing? Did you ever notice that most naysayers and dream kickers are unhappy and unfulfilled themselves? Don’t let them bring you down to their level. Find people who are already performing at the level at which you’d like to be. You’ll find they will encourage and inspire you even more.

What dream are you bringing to life this year?  And how are you getting past the naysayers?

I’m bringing my book together this year, along with some speaking. My biggest naysayers tends to be this guy that keeps showing up in my mirror. I’ve been using affirmation, positive thinking, and action to shut him up! haha, it works
I read Mony’s book a few years ago. Great lesson that can apply to people and horses.

Sutton – watch out for that guy in the mirror. He can be your biggest advocate or your biggest foe. But oh that’s right – you get to determine which guy he is.

I love this. The person trying to talk me out of my dream (though he doesn’t mean to) is my boss. For the last few years I’ve let it get to me a bit and started to think he was right. So, me and God had a chat and I realize that he is a nay-sayer because he is in a completely different mindset – his gifts are different. Now I am totally motivated to focus on my dream (and God’s plan) despite what others may think. And will I love it when I prove my boss wrong?…you betcha! :)

Jenn – we all have a person or two in our lives who is not going to be our cheerleader. But as you’ve done, if you step back and take a fresh look at what God has put in your heart and prepared you for, you’ll have the courage to move forward anyway. And make sure you find 3-4 people who are already performing at the level at which you want to perform – and hang around them!!

Monty’s book about his life story is a wonderful read, I highly recommend it….He had a terrible childhood to overcome and did so with great courage.

Thanks for reminding me to keep focused on my dream. I just signed up to publish my second book after a long hiatus from writing. My first children’s book did well; however, when it wasn’t a barnburner many people told me it was a failure and I believed them. Thanks to this web-site for practical advice and encouragement!

Stories are great. But, basic verifiable facts should at least be straight …

Monty Roberts has done his own books and movies. But, he is apparently not the inspiration for the Robert Redford movie or the book that the movie is based on.

http://www.montyroberts.com/news-archive/monty-in-the-news/horse-sense/ – Monty Roberts doesn’t endorse the movie. But neither does he dispute that he was the inspiration for the book and movie.

    But,

Having clarified that, I do like the line (true or not): “You Keep Your F – I’m Keeping My Dream!”

I read this story in Jack Canfield’s book, and it has stayed with me ever since.

I was looking for it to post in my “education to naysayers”.

    Dare I share… ;)
