There is never a perfect time to start anything. So the best strategy is just to jump and get started now. You
want to be a coach? Offer to coach someone in your church who is struggling with direction. Want to be a speaker? Volunteer to do a talk at a local service club or school. I think I spoke at every Rotary Club within 50 miles of Nashville before I starting being paid to speak. Want to have your own restaurant? Get a job in a restaurant and start learning the business.

You Keep Your F — I’m Keeping My Dream!
Here’s an excerpt from No More Dreaded Mondays
When Monty Roberts was in high school, his teacher asked the class to write about what they wanted to do when they grew up. Monty wrote that he wanted to own a ranch and raise thoroughbred racehorses. His teacher gave him an F and explained that the dream was unrealistic for a boy living in a camper in the back of a pickup truck. He would never be able to make this a reality. When the teacher offered the chance to rewrite his paper for a higher grade, Monty told him, “You keep your F; I’m keeping my dream.”

I just read Guy Kawasaki’s new book – Enchantment – the Art of Changing Hearts, Minds, and Actions – which I highly recommend. Guy referenced this old story from The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin illustrating the counterintuitive concept that asking people for help makes them want to help you more.
One year, a wealthy and influential new member of the assembly made a speech against Franklin’s appointment
to the lucrative position of clerk of the Pennsylvania General Assembly.
