Excellence or Shoddiness – choose well

People often diminish the value of a job that doesn’t seem to be important.  But slacking in a current job because it “doesn’t matter” or because you “aren’t being paid enough” is creating character habits that you take with you.  Slacking, shoddiness and blaming are not character traits you want to allow in your life.  Be excellent in whatever you are doing – excellence will become a continuing habit.

“If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted or Beethoven composed music or Shakespeare wrote poetry.  He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say:  Here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.” – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

I understand I am in the process of finding my calling. Part of this process is trying many different things. Sometimes this includes taking a job that I find I do not like. This does not mean I quit or just do enough to get by. I work hard and do a good job because there is something I can learn from the process and part of working hard is part of the experience to find my calling. You will not find your calling by just doing work you enjoy and/or sitting and just thinking about it. You need to take action, sweat, and bang up your knuckles to get there.

Do not confuse busyness for business or activity for action. We must set goals and the incremental steps to reach them. Finding our vocation or calling comes from listening.

Fear cannot be our guide either.

Well put, Josh! No matter where you choose to work there is always a lesson that can be learned.
