Is 48 Days just hype?

The questions we get every day do a great job of telling the real stories of real people.  Here’s a recent one:

“Dan, is your 48 Days a self-help program and will it find me a better job or is that all hype to sell your book?  If it does work do you have any proof of this?  I am a cynic as I believe you are trying to sell me something that may not work just so you can get rich.”

Dear Cynic – You are right to question spending any money or time in a self-help program.  But don’t slam the door completely.  I started selling 48 Days to the Work You Love in a 3-ring binder with two CDs in 1996.  And yes, I generated over $2 Million with that version, packaging them in our upstairs bonus room.  It has been updated repeatedly since then and was published by a major publisher in hardback form in 2005.  The brand new version was released in May of this year.  Even if it were tempting to do so it would be impossible to continue to sell the hundreds of thousands of copies sold each year if the content did not in fact help people.  In today’s virtual world word spreads quickly – either good or bad.

  • Will 48 Days to the Work You Love “find you a better job” – Absolutely not.  It’s just a book.  But it will show you how to make your resume jump to the top, how to find the 87% of the jobs that are never advertised, how to avoid the 5 fatal flaws in an interview, how to negotiate an extra $10,000 into your salary and how to make yourself “fireproof.”  But then you have to find a better job.
  • Do I have proof it works.  Take a little time to browse through the unsolicited testimonials we receive.
  • Still don’t want to “risk” the $10.  Go to the library and read it.  Your cost is zero.
  • Is it possible to sell “hype” and get rich?  Probably, but do you really think that would be work that I love?

Ask yourself if your cynicism is helping you create a better life.  If you won’t spend $10 on the chance that you could dramatically change your life – you’re probably being way too cautious.  And being suspicious of every new idea will keep you trapped in the same life you have now.

Totally agree with you, Dan. A person has to take risks to get unstuck and to improve their life. I heard once that you shouldn’t wait for your ship to come in — swim out to meet it!

Great answer to the cynic, Dan.
Here is the INSTANT PODCAST audio version of your answer for those auditory learners.

Jodey – wow, thanks for making that connection to where I responded to this in my podcast. How cool is that!

How many people think the tools out there are scams and hype when they were not willing to get off their butts and take action.

I want to piggyback on Josh’s comment. No matter how insightful Dan’s resources are, they can do little good unless the reader is motivated to act upon the insight. That’s why our products purposefully require an investment. We could sell more CDs if we reduced the price, but that is not our goal. Because we would have more CDs sitting on shelves unused. Our goal is to radically transform relationships. And this takes hard work and investment.

That’s why we have actually increased prices since the recession hit. And you know what’s interesting? Families are experiencing even greater changes than ever before. And I believe it’s because when they finally decide to invest in our resources, they are motivated to take the extra steps necessary to change.

Ok, I have read 48 days and No more Mondays… the No more Mondays audio I’ve listened to 10 times at least. Beginning to end.

I still have a crappy job. Is that Dan’s fault or mine?

It’s mine. Because I have not moved or acted on the information… yet.

I am one who was able to secure one of these “better jobs” at a higher wage following tips gleaned from 48 days. It was also from Dan’s material that I discovered an interest in writing I never thought was there (not sure on the talent part of it, not for me to worry about). But, I still had to “step up” and make something happen.

Thanks Dan for your ever encouraging works. They have been a great help to me.

I also need motivation. I have read 48days but need motivation. I wish there was an itunes audio book of 48days.

It took me many years to get motivated to lose weight and since joining WW I have lost 16 pound in 7 weeks. I had a desire for years, but lacked motivation discipline, and a change of habits. I need to radically change my job mindset as well.

I read Dan’s book and took his class last fall. I’ve been an English teacher and part-time writer for nearly twenty years and have alway just wanted to write full-time. I don’t know if it was coincidence or not, but by the time i finished the class, I had a book contract with a major publisher and am now writing full-time. I left a stable, secure job in the middle of a recession and some people thought I was crazy, but now the future looks brighter than ever. This deal will lead to additional deals and maybe speaking gigs, etc.. I had to learn to get focused instead of trying to do too many things, and then just take a leap of faith.

Randy — what an awesome personal story! I’m confident you had put a lot of things in motion already by the time you read my book. Probably more convergence than coincidence. We’re told that “luck” is when preparation meets opportunity. So now people will think you were lucky. You know what really happened – congratulations!
